Nommern is a destination for travellers who want to combine sandstone landscapes, hiking trails and traces of culture in one stay. The Noumerleeën offer a miniature picture of the sandstone region of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland; there are also local trails with very different focuses. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Nommern, you can plan your daily rhythm at the same time: a short loop in the village centre, a quiet stretch of forest or the striking rocky landscape each give the day a different direction. This means choosing where to stay starts with the experiences you are looking for locally.

Sandstone, Rocks and Protected Area

The register, updated on 27 July 2026, lists Nommerlayen as a 142-hectare protected area extending across Nommern and Larochette. The Noumerleeën offer a miniature picture of the sandstone region of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland. The Mullerthal Trail’s Extra Tour A crosses this rocky landscape; clearly visible remains of the Roman refuge fort of Alebuerg are located on a rocky outcrop in the Noumerleeën. The Champignon offers a different perspective: it is a freestanding block of Luxembourg sandstone. Around it is a rare habitat of sandy dry grassland interspersed with heath on a thin, nutrient-poor and dry layer of sand. The rock formation and the habitat offer two different perspectives on the nature around Nommern.

Hiking Trails with Their Own Character

The local hiking trails each have a different focus. N1 starts and ends at Camping Nommerlayen in Nommern. As Luxembourg’s first Well-being Trail, it incorporates relaxation exercises and psychological tasks along the route. N2 passes partly through the village and through a quiet forest. One section runs along the former Jhangli narrow-gauge railway, which was in use from 1882 to 1948; this means the trail also touches on transport history.

The short circular trail N3 starts in the village centre and leads to the Lourdes Chapel with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The Actionbound puzzle trail “Mam Noemi Noumer op der Sich nom Meteorittestëbs” also runs through Nommern and the surrounding area along N3. Recommended combinations include a hike on N3 with a visit to Distillerie Miny. N4 is 5.06 kilometres long, is rated easy, and starts and ends at the Nommern municipal centre. This trail is not suitable for pushchairs because of several descending steps in the first half. N3 is designed as a short loop; for N4, both the exact distance and the restriction for pushchairs are important planning considerations.

Cycling and Cultural Heritage

A 28-kilometre mountain-biking route runs through forests and fields around Larochette and Nommern. The municipal route description was last amended on 10 September 2021. As practical details may change, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting off.

Nommern’s church is also protected as national cultural heritage; the national protection list is dated 4 August 2026. Together with the visible remains of Alebuerg and the former Jhangli railway, this offers another way to explore the history of the village. Depending on whether you are more interested in rocks and habitats, activity or traces of history, you can plan your days in Nommern in different ways.
