Luxembourg combines impressive landscapes, European history and a wide range of activities within a small area. Particularly striking is the UNESCO Global Geopark Mëllerdall with its Luxembourg sandstone formation, which reaches a thickness of up to 100 metres. The UNESCO Global Geopark Mëllerdall is one of the most spectacular sandstone landscapes in Western Europe. Those who want to discover Luxembourg on foot will find several different options: The 112-kilometre Mullerthal Trail consists of three loops. In the Éislek region, there are more than 200 circular hiking trails through forests, past castles, across high plateaus and between rocks. Another option is provided by more than 150 self-guided circular hiking trails known as Auto-pédestres, which are between 5 and 15 kilometres long.

The Minett Trail can also be planned in stages. It comprises ten official sections ranging from 7 to 15 kilometres in length. For choosing where to stay, it is particularly convenient that all access points to the Minett Trail are located at railway stations and bus stops. Luxembourg offers free public transport nationwide, including trains, trams and buses. This makes it easier to consider whether to organise your trip mainly around hiking stages, cultural destinations or a flexible combination of both.

UNESCO culture and special discoveries

The old town districts and fortifications of Luxembourg City were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. They are considered an outstanding example of a fortified European city. The largely preserved fortifications in Luxembourg City include the Pétrusse Casemates. In addition, more than 60 art and history museums, galleries and cultural heritage institutions offer many opportunities for cultural days out.

There are also notable destinations outside the capital. Vianden Castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. Every summer, it hosts an annual medieval festival featuring combat demonstrations, musicians, fire performers, jesters, minstrels and birds of prey displays. The Echternach Dancing Procession takes place every year on Whit Tuesday; thousands of people dance to traditional music around the large abbey in a special hopping step. The procession has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 2010.

The cultural diversity also includes Minett Park Fond-de-Gras with Fond-de-Gras, the village of Lasauvage, the former Giele Botter open-cast mine and the Celtic oppidum of Titelberg. In Clervaux Castle, the collection The Family of Man has been permanently displayed since the mid-1990s. It comprises 503 photographs by 273 photographers from 68 countries and has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register since 2003. The Roman Villa of Echternach is one of the most important surviving Roman-era structures north of the Alps.

Cycling, water and a journey at your own pace

Luxembourg offers around 600 kilometres of cycle paths and 700 kilometres of mountain biking trails. Those who want to explore the country by car can follow the Grand Tour du Luxembourg. The circular route is 450 kilometres long and is travelled independently in your own vehicle. Kayaking and canoeing are possible on the fast-flowing rivers in the north. The range of water sports also includes boat trips, stand-up paddleboarding, jet skiing, water skiing, surfing and wakeboarding. The Moselle offers conditions for experienced water sports enthusiasts as well as beginners.

Regional cuisine and suitable bases

Luxembourg can also be discovered through its cuisine: offerings include Moselle wines, cheese from the Mullerthal and cider. Traditional specialities include Gromperekichelcher, Kachkéis, Rieslingspaschtéit and Bamkuch. Wine hikes along the Moselle combine an outdoor hike with a tasting.
