Roeser – Nature Trails, Culture and History
Roeser combines protected nature, varied trails and a surprising amount of cultural history. Those planning a trip with different interests can combine nature observation, walks, cycling and historical discoveries here. A holiday apartment in Roeser provides a suitable base if you would like to incorporate the offerings of the municipality and its districts into your plans at your leisure.
Experience nature and choose your trails
One of the special experiences is the RÉI'serwee, an interactive nature trail through the Roeserbann. At twelve numbered stations, visitors are given tasks that are explained through QR codes using photos or videos. The trail combines exercise with small discovery activities and offers an unusual way to experience the landscape.
In the Krautemer Bësch, the forest educational trail covers 4.7 kilometres. Fifteen information panels focus on the forest ecosystem. The information materials, renewed in 2021, cover topics including the wildcat and the wolf. Those who prefer different routes will find four different trails in the Nordic Walking Park in Crauthem. This makes it possible to plan days in nature according to the preferred theme and trail length, without concentrating all experiences on a single route.
The Roeserbann itself is a shared national protected area of Hesperange and Roeser covering 352.67 hectares. The Route Tour am Minett – Grand Tour du Luxembourg also passes through Roeser. This landscape is particularly interesting if, when choosing your accommodation, you value combining local exploration with excursions into the surrounding area.
Cultural trails and historic sites
The Peppange–Livange cultural trail runs for 8.7 kilometres through the municipality of Roeser and is equipped with 16 information panels about historical sights and facts. Another historical landmark is the Borne des Quatre Seigneurs. Five paths lead in a star pattern from Peppange, Bettembourg, Hellange, Dudelange and Zoufftgen to this 1,200-year-old sandstone marker from Roman times.
In Peppange, several sites tell the story of different eras. The Kneppesch Haff was built in 1775 as an impressive farmstead and converted into a convent in 1875 to accommodate Benedictine nuns from Germany. The convent chapel contains murals created in 1928 under the direction of a Benedictine monk from Maria Laach Abbey. The Church of Saint Hubert in Peppange is protected as national cultural heritage.
The Grande-Duchesse Charlotte Carriage Museum in Peppange also has a clear cultural focus. It displays 33 historic horse-drawn carriages from the 19th century. The collection also includes seven carriages belonging to the grand-ducal court and the Grand Duke’s large gala coupé. In Roeser, a first church was built during the same period as the Merovingian graves near Bivange. Details like these make the history of the area tangible through individual buildings and collections.
Roeser as a base for your trip
For getting around locally, an important shared walking and cycling path connects Rue des Sacrifiés with Rue de l'Alzette in Roeser. Bus route 511 also connects Luxembourg Rocade, Alzingen, Roeser and Bettembourg. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to spend your days mainly on nature trails, at cultural sites or combining both. Roeser brings these different travel ideas together without requiring you to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.
If you are planning a trip with different interests, you can combine a day in nature on the RÉI'serwee or in the Krautemer Bësch with a detour to Peppange and its historic sights. When choosing suitable accommodation in Roeser, the main consideration is which of these impressions should shape your trip and which trails, museums or cultural sites you would like to include in your personal daily itinerary.
