Discover Grevenmacher

Grevenmacher combines the Moselle with the vineyards, offering a variety of impressions for planning your trip. From the Moselle promenade, the view extends to the Moselle bridge, while paths through vineyards, forests and viewpoints also reveal the town’s hilly side. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Grevenmacher, you can therefore first decide whether short walks along the river, cultural history or wine experiences should be the focus of your stay.

Hiking between the Moselle, forest and vineyards

For a manageable walk, the approximately 800-metre-long hiking route along the Moselle promenade is suitable. Over a length of 10 metres, it has a maximum gradient of 10 per cent.

Grevenmacher offers two circular hiking trails and five other hiking trails. The local GM1 trail passes the Gallo-Roman funerary monument “Réimerdenkmol”. GM2 leads to the Gruussfooscht viewpoint, then runs through the forest towards Haard and continues through vineyards. At Hougeriicht hill, the Longkaul locality offers views of the vineyards and the Moselle valley. This allows you to choose between a short route along the Moselle and a trail with views, forest and vineyard landscapes.

The historical and cultural circular walk also combines exercise with traces of the town’s history. It leads to the walls of the old fortress and has a public transport stop at Grevenmacher Gare routière. This is a useful point of orientation if you do not want to limit your activities exclusively to a single destination.

Fortress history and special places

The fortress wall of Grevenmacher formed a square measuring 280 by 250 metres and had 27 or 28 towers as well as four gates. The Turgaass takes up the town’s historical past with six illustrated panels in an open-air gallery. The former guard and fortress tower also stands at the parish church of St. Laurent. It is 26 metres high, and its walls are 1.50 to 1.80 metres thick.

Further stops bring history to life: the Sainte-Croix Chapel was built in 1737. The Kundel is a replica, built in 2009, of the only washhouse within the town walls of Grevenmacher. The upper floor houses a gallery with information about finds from the excavations carried out in the Baxeras embankments from 2003 onwards.

At the Kulturhuef, you can print a souvenir on a historic hand-operated printing press. This allows you to combine a cultural visit with a hands-on activity instead of learning about history solely through buildings and panels.

Wine, Crémant and tropical nature

Grevenmacher also offers opportunities for connoisseurs. Caves Bernard-Massard offers guided tours about the production of wine and Crémant at its historic facilities in Grevenmacher. The cellars of Bernard-Massard also offer tastings of wines from Domaine Thill Château de Schengen. Caves de Grevenmacher offers wine tastings, advice on wine selection and sales of the desired wines on the banks of the river.

Another idea for a visit is the Päiperleksgaart, a tropical garden covering more than 600 square metres and home to hundreds of exotic butterflies. Chinese quail, chameleons, tortoises and bees also live there. Alongside hiking trails, fortress history and wine, this provides another nature experience to choose from.

Which accommodation suits your travel plans?

When looking for accommodation, it is worth organising your preferred daily routines in advance. For walks and views of the Moselle, the Moselle promenade and the short route are the main attractions. If you would like to explore the history in greater depth, you can consider the circular walk, the Turgaass, the chapel, the Kundel and the Kulturhuef. For wine enthusiasts, the cellars and wine tastings mentioned above offer a particular focus. A holiday apartment in Grevenmacher can therefore serve as a base for days on holiday with different emphases, without requiring you to commit to just one type of experience.
