Wormeldange – Moselle Valley, Vineyards and Panoramic Views

Wormeldange combines vineyards, the Moselle Valley and historical discoveries to create a destination with many different facets. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for your trip, you can base your choice on whether you are primarily interested in panoramic views, hiking trails, wine tastings or cultural experiences. Many of these experiences lead to the Koeppchen, into the vineyards or to the villages in the municipality.

Panoramic Views and Trails at the Koeppchen

A distinctive starting point is the Koeppchen viewpoint in the municipality of Wormeldange. It is situated at just under 250 metres above sea level and offers views of Wormeldange in the valley, Wormeldange-Haut, the Moselle Valley and Wincheringen on the other side of the Moselle. The view can be combined with a hike: the Wormeldange Auto-Pédestre hiking trail leads to the Wormer Koeppchen and the Donatus Chapel, which has a viewpoint overlooking the Moselle Valley. In both directions, the trail is marked with a blue diamond on a white background.

Another option is the Promenade viticole. It leads from the lower part of Wormeldange village to the heights of the Koeppchen and makes the transition between the village area and the vineyards the central theme of the trail. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether you would rather spend your days on trails at these higher elevations or exploring wine and cultural attractions. This allows you to take the route into account when planning your day without assuming a specific walking time.

Wine, Muschelkalk Limestone and Special Experiences

Wormeldange is closely associated with Riesling. At the Koeppchen vineyard, Muschelkalk limestone soil and the south-facing slope create favourable conditions for Riesling; this is the main grape variety produced in Wormeldange. The Domaines Vinsmoselle winery is also a production site for the Poll-Fabaire Crémant-luxembourgeois brand. The winery team offers discovery tours featuring various Luxembourg wines and Crémants. In summer, you can taste different Moselle wine grape varieties there on a sunny terrace surrounded by vineyards.

There are also thematically suitable destinations outside Wormeldange to include in your travel plans. The Palmberg Ahn wine and nature trail starts near the Centre Culturel in Ahn and runs along steep Muschelkalk limestone cliffs through vineyards. The cross-border International Geological Trail Nittel, Machtum, Wellen uses information panels to explain the history of the Nitteler Fels nature reserve, the Moselle, Muschelkalk limestone, the region’s geological development and the age of the mammoths. This allows you to choose between wine, landscapes and geological topics without limiting your trip to just one type of experience.

Chapel and Culture of Remembrance

The Donatus Chapel stands on the Koeppchen; construction began in 1925 and was completed in 1927. The altar relief depicts Saint Donatus and was created by the artist Ernest Würth, who came from Wormeldange. The chapel also contains a war memorial, which was inaugurated in 1966 in the presence of Prime Minister Pierre Werner. These details give the viewpoint an additional historical and cultural dimension. Travellers with different interests can therefore combine a day of hiking with an exploration of architectural history, art and the culture of remembrance.

Guidance for Choosing Your Accommodation

The Riesling Express is available for arrival and day-trip planning. It is a demand-responsive bus operated by the municipality of Wormeldange, serving the entire municipality as well as certain destinations in neighbouring municipalities; it was introduced at the end of 2019. A bridge also connects Wormeldange with the German bank of the Moselle. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider not only your preferred itinerary but also whether you would like to include the municipality and individual destinations in the neighbouring Moselle region. The Riesling Open provides a special occasion for this: on the third weekend of September, Wormeldange, Ehnen, Ahn and Machtum open their cellars together. The programme includes tastings of Riesling, other products and Crémants, as well as music and local specialities.
