Manternach combines nature experiences, village history and varied trails within a compact thematic area, without this having to form a single circular walk. The Manternacher Fiels as a nature experience

The Manternacher Fiels has officially been designated a nature forest reserve since 2012 and is also a national and European protected area. At its centre lies a ravine forest covering around 57 hectares, which is considered the largest ravine forest in Luxembourg in terms of area. Together, these features define a protected natural area with woodland, rocks and the Syre Valley as a recurring landscape feature. Here, you experience more than just a single viewpoint.

The Traumschleife Manternacher Fiels offers an impressive perspective, with a viewpoint on the Lelliger Plateau. The route also passes rocks that rise up to 50 metres high and are covered with ivy, lichens and moss. If landscape views and distinctive natural formations are important to you when planning your trip, this provides a specific focus for a stay in Manternach. The CFL hiking trail through the Manternacher Fiels also leads to a viewpoint on the plateau, from where you can look out over the nature reserve, the ravine forest and the Syre Valley.

Planning hiking trails and cycling tours

For a manageable hike, the 7 km ANF No. 2 Manternach-Lellig educational trail is available. It begins and ends at the A Wiewesch centre in the heart of Manternach village. After a short distance, the educational trail enters the Manternacher Fiels nature forest reserve and reaches Lellig via the plateau. Its defined starting and ending points make it an easy-to-understand option if you are looking for a route connected to the village centre and the surrounding landscape.

The 11.5 km CFL hiking trail between Manternach and Wasserbillig begins at Manternach railway station. Its first stop is the A Wiewesch nature reserve centre, 100 metres from the station. When planning your day, this allows you to distinguish between the shorter educational trail and the longer connection. For active days spent cycling, the mountain bike circuit from Manternach runs through the valleys of the Moselle and the Syre. The A Wiewesch centre also organises themed walks that invite you to discover the region’s scenic diversity; there are numerous trails in the surrounding area.

A Wiewesch, Viz and miniWënzer

The A Wiewesch centre is located in the heart of the village, in a former farm built in 1887. An exhibition there presents the natural and cultural heritage of the Syre Valley and its surroundings. The centre offers activities on biodiversity and sustainability throughout the year. This complements the trails in the landscape with a cultural and thematic perspective that can also be interesting during a stay with a changing daily programme.

One of the centre’s main October activities is the production of fresh apple juice called “Viz”. As part of the “miniWënzer” wine-growing experience, the event takes place in the vineyard of the Manternacher Fiels nature reserve; participants are involved with all their senses in the production of wine and grape juice. Children aged eight to ten can discover how wine and grape juice are made as part of this programme. This creates a special excursion focus for families, while the year-round activities and hiking trails open up further possibilities for planning your trip.
