The Echternach dancing procession is particularly distinctive. It takes place every year on the Tuesday after Whitsun in the medieval town centre of Echternach and was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010. Around 8,000 dancers are divided into 45 groups according to a ritual passed down from generation to generation. Even outside the procession, Echternach offers several points of interest for visitors interested in culture. The Abbey Museum displays facsimiles of important manuscripts created in Echternach and presents the life and work of Saint Willibrord as well as his veneration. Information panels and a video projection at the Documentation Centre on the dancing procession explain its history. The Merovingian crypt of the Basilica of St Willibrord contains a white marble sarcophagus with the mortal remains of Saint Willibrord.

Another historical highlight is the Roman Villa of Echternach. It was built between the 1st and 5th centuries and is one of the largest Roman villas north of the Alps. The 60-minute Echternach Classic guided tour is also a good way to gain an initial overview of the history and sights.

Lake, Bathing Area and Nature Experiences

The 30-hectare artificial Echternach Lake is located at the entrance to Echternach. A path around the lake is suitable for walking, inline skating and cycling. Pedal boat trips are possible on the water; a permit is required for fishing. Stand-up paddleboards can be rented on the island on the eastern shore, where the Pier'75 bistro is located.

Adventure Island has a bathing area that is freely accessible every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is open from 1 May to 30 September. Depending on the time of year you travel, this allows you to combine a stay at the lake with other activities. The Naturhaous am See complements the nature area with educational trails and a wildlife exhibition. It is located directly on Echternach Lake and on the large Haardt forest massif, which has the status of a European habitat protection area.

Hiking Trails for Different Day Plans

The Mullerthal Trail offers a variety of landscape experiences in Echternach. Route 1 starts at the basilica and leads, among other places, through the historic old town and to Echternach Lake. Route 2 can be started beside the basilica and runs through forest and rock landscapes to Wollefsschlucht. The local E5 hiking trail also runs along Echternach Lake. It is considered an easy hike and includes a detour to the Thoull hill, with views of Echternach. The nearest bus stop to the E5 trail is Echternach Nonnemillen/Lac; there is a car park directly at the starting point. For a shorter tour or one with fewer significant climbs, the Ierelchen forest path is a good option. It is suitable for everyone, has no major climbs and leads to the Paulsplatte viewpoint. A ramp leads to this viewpoint, from which you can look out over the Sûre Valley.

The Echternach Vital Trail focuses on something different: At twelve play and exercise stations, you can test your mobility and balance. Those travelling with different interests can combine active sections, nature observation and cultural destinations without making their entire stay revolve around just one type of experience.
