Breidweiler offers a concise glimpse into its history: a chapel is already mentioned in 1570 at the site of today’s cemetery; the present-day St. Hubertus Church was built in 1881. The former chapel was also demolished that year. Another natural attraction to consider when planning your trip is Kallektuffquell, where clear, lime-rich water flows over a rock formation into a basin. The church and archaeological finds are thus complemented by a landscape feature that can also be explored via hiking trails.

Church history with a Roman connection

When the chapel was demolished in 1881, Roman masonry was discovered; around eight sculpted stones also came to light. Three of the stones dating from Roman times were built into the altar base of the new St. Hubertus Church. This connects the history of the finds with a specific part of the church’s furnishings, rather than tracing it through dates alone. The Roman dating refers to the reused stones; by contrast, the present-day St. Hubertus Church in Breidweiler was built in 1881.

The furnishings offer another distinctive detail: the church’s tabernacle features large Rococo volutes, curved, rolled ornamental forms. Together with the reused Roman stonework, they create a contrast between ancient fragments and Rococo ornamentation. For culturally minded travelers, this highlights the difference between the building’s history, its archaeological finds and its design.

Rock, water and hiking trails

At Kallektuffquell, clear, lime-rich water flows over a rock formation into a basin. It can be reached via local hiking trail W7 and Route 3 of the Mullerthal Trail. This natural attraction differs from the church history: here, the focus is on water and rock; there, on the building’s history, archaeological finds and furnishings.

The nearest listed bus stop to Kallektuffquell is Müllerthal Schiessentümpel (Parking), 1.4 km away. Transport information may change, so check locally before traveling.

Regional spirits and planning your visit

Difrulux Distillerie produces eau-de-vie, liqueurs and other spirits, using mainly fruit from the region. The exhibition room also serves as a shop, where you can taste the products on site. Guided tours, including tastings, are available by request from April 1 to October 31, 2026. Prior contact is required for a behind-the-scenes look at the production processes. Confirm dates and visit arrangements in advance.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to include a hike to Kallektuffquell, or are you particularly interested in the church’s history and archaeological finds? If you also plan to include a tasting or guided tour, be sure to take the respective visit arrangements into account. If you are traveling with children or people with different interests, it may help to plan nature and culture as separate day-trip themes.
