Vernio between the Apennines, Water and Forests

Vernio is predominantly mountainous and characterized by streams, dense vegetation and wooded districts. The districts lie along a broad bend in the Bisenzio River; at the same time, Vernio is crossed by the Apennine watershed. Hiking along Medieval Paths

The Via delle Rocche is approximately 40 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of around 2,000 meters. It follows medieval paths along the hillside and connects, among other places, the Rocca di Vernio. This gives you a clearly defined theme for active days: The approximate route length and elevation difference help you better assess different day plans and personal interests, without limiting the route to a specific use.

Rocca di Vernio and Traces of History

The Rocca di Vernio was the seat of the fiefdom of Vernio. It was initially owned by the Counts Alberti and, from the 14th century onward, by the Bardi family, who are described as well-known Florentine merchants. A convenient road branches off from the village of Sasseta and leads to the Rocca. The site is privately owned; arrangements must be made with the owners in order to visit it.

Montepiano also brings landscape and culture together. There, Prato del Sole and the geometric garden of the mill include a lawn surrounded by trees. At its center stands the enameled metal sculpture “Sole,” donated by Bruno Saetti. Saetti had chosen Montepiano as his place to live and work.

Mountains, Monasteries and Regional Discoveries

The summit of Poggio Mezzana lies in the vicinity of Vernio. The surrounding area also includes Monte Tronale, Monte Coroncina, Monte Bucciana and the ruins of Badia A Taona. The Badia di San Salvatore di Vaiano monastery is also located near Vernio. In the wider region are Borgo della Rocca, a castle complex, and Castello Villa Smilea, a castle.

The MUMAT Museum offers workshops for schools and guided tours. A special culinary tradition is the Festa della Polenta, held every year on the first Sunday of Lent in San Quirico in Vernio, celebrating sweet polenta made from chestnut flour. The Festa della Polenta also includes a historical parade, performances by historical groups and stalls selling traditionally handcrafted artisan products.

The ancient Meucci Mill dates from the late 18th century. It is located near the confluence of the Fiumenta and Bisenzio rivers and at a mercatale, a place of trade and exchange. It thus complements the historical sites with a specific example of the connection between waterways, mills and regional life.
