Cantagallo combines paths through forests with places where nature, textile history and contemporary art can be discovered. The Via delle Fonti e dei Mulini and the Sentiero delle Sorgenti del Bisenzio shape the area’s hiking focus with a multi-day route and a day hike.

Holiday apartment in Cantagallo: Hiking with different stages

The Via delle Fonti e dei Mulini di Cantagallo is a seven-day route along CAI trails and runs almost entirely within the municipality of Cantagallo. It can also be completed in individual circular stages, each of which can be hiked in one day. This means that the same hiking area offers different stage lengths for your personal planning. The individual circular stages of the Via can be planned as independent hiking days, while the full route provides a longer framework for the tour.

The Sentiero delle Sorgenti del Bisenzio is a circular hiking trail that can be completed in one day; Luogomano is recommended as the starting and finishing point. The trail passes the buildings of Vespaio and delle Barbe. Several rest areas with tables and benches, fences, steps and complete signage with hiking, place-name and historical information about the surroundings are part of its facilities. When planning the day, breaks at tables and benches are just as much a part of the route as sections with steps and fences.

The cammINatura project, created in 2020 by the Comune di Cantagallo, provides an easy-to-use map with points of interest and recommended walking routes in the municipality. It can be viewed via Google Maps on desktop and mobile devices without an additional app.

Forest Landscape and Orientation

The Acquerino-Cantagallo Provincial Nature Reserve is characterized by extensive beech forests, chestnut groves, conifer plantations and mixed forests. The nature reserve is also home to the centuries-old Faggione di Luogomano beech tree, whose crown covers an area of approximately 600 m².

The visitor centre of the Riserva Acquerino Cantagallo is located in the village. It provides information and assistance with organizing hikes.

Textile History, Art and Fortress

The Museo Materia presents the history and development of the textile sector in the Bisenzio Valley and in Prato through ecological, historical, artistic and technological content.

The Rocca di Cerbaia is a fortification in the municipality of Cantagallo. Its origins probably date back to the 12th century; it was part of a defensive system guarding the road towards Lombardy.

The Rocca di Cerbaia was the residence of the noblewoman Cunizza da Romano. According to a local legend, Dante Alighieri was turned away there on a cold night in 1285 while seeking refuge.

Luicciana, a small district of Cantagallo, has become an open-air museum and a contemporary art complex.
