Holiday apartment in Olmedo: culture, nature and breadmaking

Olmedo reveals several facets: Roman baths, Romanesque architecture, seasonal wetlands, Mediterranean maquis and traditional breadmaking. Festivals and the Casa delle Farfalle add customs and tropical butterflies to the character of the town.

Roman and Romanesque traces

The Terme Romane di Talia are baths from the Roman imperial period that belonged to a rural villa. The Nuraghe Talia is located near the road connecting Olmedo with the SS 291 (Sassari–Fertilia), and close to Roman thermal structures. In Olmedo, you can therefore encounter various historical testimonies.

In the centre of Olmedo, the Romanesque church of Nostra Signora di Talia stands directly beside the town hall. It dates approximately from the period between 1100 and 1125 and was built from limestone, basaltic trachyte and reddish tuff. Its basilica plan comprises three naves: a wider central nave and two side naves, each less than one metre wide. The side naves have slightly raised barrel vaults; the central nave has a wooden roof structure.

Landscape shaped by changing rainy seasons

On the plateau of Sos Pianos, seasonal wetlands and small lakes form during the rainy seasons; locally, they are called “pischinas”. Mediterranean maquis is widespread in Olmedo. Its most important plants include, among others, mastic, strawberry tree, wild olive, juniper and myrtle. Thus, alongside its changing water surfaces, the landscape also has a distinctive range of vegetation.

Bread, festivals and Christmas traditions

The patron saint festival in honour of the Madonna di Talia takes place every year on 1 and 2 May and brings the streets of Olmedo’s town centre to life. Held annually, the Mostra del Pane presents traditional breads made by local women bakers and revives the old craft of breadmaking. Traditional bread preparation includes the natural sourdough starter “sa madrighe”, made from the preserved sour dough “su fremmentasu” from the previous baking.

The Presepe di Pane is set up every year during the Christmas season in the Romanesque church of Nostra Signora di Talia. Bread therefore appears not only as a craft, but also as part of a seasonal tradition associated with a specific historic building.

Butterflies and play area

The Casa delle Farfalle at Butterfly House Sardegna is Sardinia’s only biosphere where several hundred tropical butterflies fly and reproduce.

Butterfly House Sardegna also has a large modern children’s playground. It includes a pirate ship, a train and various slides.
