Churches and Romanesque Forms
The Chiesa di San Pancrazio di Nursi stands in a secluded position on a hill in the Sedini countryside. It occupies the only surviving room of a 12th-century monastery. The site therefore combines a distinctive architectural feature with the monastery’s long history.
The Chiesa di San Nicola di Silanis lies in the valley of the Rio Silanis, beside the abandoned village of Speluncas. Its ruins are known for their precise stonework and the distinctive clarity of their Romanesque architectural forms. The two churches offer different starting points for exploring Sedini’s architectural history: one centres on a surviving monastic room, the other on the design of Romanesque forms and the working of stone.
Rock-Cut Tombs and Museum Exhibits
The Domus de Janas “La Rocca” is a necropolis carved into the rock, dating from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. A necropolis is a burial site; the rock-cutting makes this prehistoric place a different way to explore history from the churches and their architecture. Together, these sights show how far apart Sedini’s historical reference points are.
The Museo Domu De Janas La Rocca has a permanent exhibition of fossils from the Sedini area, including around 200 specimens from the Middle Miocene. The museum also features a reconstructed 19th-century farmhouse from Anglona, with around 300 artefacts, spread across two floors. The fossils and the reconstructed rural home offer different perspectives: the exhibition focuses on the history of the Earth, while the farmhouse provides insight into a historic regional way of life.
Woods, Trails and Water
Trekking routes in Sedini pass through forests of holm and downy oaks, leading to old mills and abandoned villages. Both the wooded valleys and historic destinations are part of these trails’ character. Along the way through the Valle del Silanis, markings can be found on some boulders.
Another landscape destination is the Cascata Pilchina di li Caaddaggi on the Rio Silani, southwest of Sedini. The waterfall is about 7 metres high. Its approximate height and riverside location make it a clearly defined natural attraction alongside the woods and trails to mills and abandoned villages.
Wine, Cuisine and Choosing Your Accommodation
“Feste in Cantina” combines tastings of new wines with dishes from Sedini’s local culinary tradition. The 12th edition of this food and wine event also included visits to sixteen historic cellars. Wine, food and historic cellars offer a distinct cultural focus alongside the churches, museum and landscape. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the dates in advance.
When looking for a holiday rental in Sedini, you can start by considering which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay. Churches, rock-cut tombs and museum collections offer different points of interest for those interested in cultural history; trekking routes, woods and the waterfall provide a different focus.
