San Leonardo combines remarkable cultural heritage with a varied landscape. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment as a base for eventful days can combine historic churches, a site of natural significance, paths along streams and activities for children. The range extends from quiet discoveries to more active pursuits.

Historic churches and evidence of local history

The Church of San Leonardo is documented as having existed as early as the 12th century. Its history therefore reaches far back; at the same time, the building's more recent past is also part of its story. After being damaged by the Friuli earthquake in 1976, the church was restored between 1984 and 1986. For travellers interested in culture, this offers a tangible insight into the site's long development and into the way a historic building was dealt with after a major event.

Another destination is the Church of Santa Lucia in Cravero, built in 1454. Inside is a fresco cycle attributed to the painter Jernej iz Loke, also known as Bartolomeo von Škofja Loka, or to one of his pupils. The church also has a richly gilded and decorated wooden altar from the 18th century, a work by Lukas Sharf. Anyone interested in sacred art and historic craftsmanship will find several different points of interest here.

The stone slab of the Merso Bank is another historic feature. It established the administrative and legal rules for managing local autonomy until the 19th century. This testimony complements the ecclesiastical sights with an insight into earlier forms of administration and community life.

Cascate di Kot and paths through the landscape

Just outside San Leonardo, on the road to Altana, lies the site of natural significance known as Cascate di Kot. The protected site is a habitat for the rare plant Ruscus hypoglossum. This makes it a destination where not only the water and landscape but also the distinctive plant life deserve attention.

An easy path along the Patok and Pod Tamoran streams leads to the hollow containing the Cascate di Kot. Along the way, it passes the ruins of an old mill. Anyone wishing to combine a nature excursion with traces of history can include this path in their day’s plans. The San Leonardo Trail also runs between Merso di Sopra and Cravero, offering another opportunity to explore the surrounding area on foot.

Shared experiences and practical information

For travellers with children, Parco Michael Puppin in Merso di Sopra offers games and attractions for children of all ages. The park's sports complex also includes a climbing wall that is open to everyone. This makes it possible to combine cultural visits and experiences in nature with time outdoors and more active activities.

There is a current travel detail to bear in mind when arriving: the Udine–Cividale railway line has been closed to rail traffic since 20 May 2024; buses operate as a replacement. Although the municipal travel information still lists the line as a train connection for travelling to San Leonardo, the replacement service is the relevant option for concrete planning.

Depending on the pace of travel you prefer, San Leonardo can therefore be interesting as a culturally oriented base, a starting point for experiences in nature or a place for shared days with children. In addition to San Leonardo, you can also discover Castions Di Strada, Remanzacco, Savogna di Cividale, Faedis, Bagnaria Arsa, Pozzuolo del Friuli, Gonars and Sutrio.
