Faedis: Castle Routes, Waterfalls and Wine
Accommodation in Faedis
Faedis combines historic castles, marked paths through forests and valleys, waterfalls and a strong wine tradition. This gives visitors different reasons to travel there: you can explore medieval fortifications, plan a route to the Cascate Gemelle or discover wineries with visits and tastings. When looking for a holiday apartment in Faedis, the desired mix of culture, nature and regional delights can serve as a useful starting point for planning your trip.
Castles and historical traces
The castle route La pedemontana orientale passes through Faedis towards Canale di Grivò. It includes the Castelli di Cucagna and Zucco. Above Faedis, Castello di Cucagna formed the centre of a powerful defensive system. Visits are available by reservation through the Consorzio per la Salvaguardia dei Castelli Storici del Friuli Venezia Giulia. Anyone wishing to include this visit should therefore treat the reservation as a separate part of their travel preparations.
Castello di Zucco also combines history with a walking experience: marked forest paths from Faedis lead there on foot. The structure was built in 1248 by Adalpretto di Cucagna on Rodingerius Hill. From the village of Sant'Anastasia, numerous panoramic paths also lead through valleys and past castles to the mountain huts. Castello di Cucagna can be reached on foot via a path from Borgo Santa Anastasia. Depending on your focus, you can therefore choose between a historical route, panoramic paths and a targeted hike to a castle.
In the town centre, the Centa di Faedis fortification stood in Piazza Plebiscito beneath the twentieth-century church of Santa Maria Assunta. Today, only the fourteenth-century tower remains of the complex; a belfry was added to it in the seventeenth century. Another sacred destination is the church of Madonna in Castello. It dates from the fourteenth century, and a fresco of the Madonna Lactans can be viewed inside.
Castello di Soffumbergo also broadens the historical picture of Faedis. In 1298, the Patriarch chose it as the court's summer residence. The ancient chapel of Castello di Soffumbergo has been completely restored. Castello di Soffumbergo thus complements Faedis' historical destinations. You can incorporate the sites of Cucagna, Zucco and Soffumbergo into your travel plans according to your interests.
Forest Paths, Waterfalls and Places of Remembrance
The route to the Cascate Gemelle runs through the forest parallel to the Rio Marchiat and leads to the twin waterfalls near Faedis. After driving from Faedis towards Canebola, the path begins at a wooden sign; from the car park, an approximately 50-metre footpath leads there.
Another path leads to the huts of Topli Uorch, now generally known as the Malghe di Porzus. They are a national monument commemorating a massacre carried out between partisan forces in 1945. Information panels are available on site. The route to the Malghe di Porzus is signposted from Faedis, and there is a large car park near the huts. This makes it possible to combine the visit to this historical place of remembrance with a drive and a signposted path.
Wine and Regional Experiences
Faedis is a well-known wine-growing area. Its leading product is Refosco, an old grape variety with a deep ruby-red colour and fruity flavour. Around twenty varieties of wine are grown in the municipality, and Picolit is also part of Faedis' wine production. Numerous wineries offer visits and tastings. The Festa del Vino e delle Fragole is one of the best-known events in the Faedis community. If you choose your accommodation according to your interests, this focus may be particularly suitable when wine, local traditions and historical discoveries are to stand on an equal footing alongside walks and trails.
Faedis therefore offers families and travel groups with different preferences several clearly distinct ideas for day trips: castles and churches for visitors interested in culture, forest paths and waterfalls for time spent outdoors, and wineries and the Festa del Vino e delle Fragole for regional insights. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these experiences should occupy the largest part of your trip and which destinations you want to include only as additions.
