Accommodation in Pozzuolo del Friuli
Pozzuolo del Friuli combines impressive archaeology with local history, museums and special experiences.
Archaeology around Sammardenchia
One focal point is the Centro Visite Storico Archeologico. It documents the ancient history of the Pozzuolo del Friuli area, particularly the prehistoric settlement of Sammardenchia. This is one of the largest settlements of the Early Neolithic in northern Italy. Displays as well as copies and reconstructions of ancient artefacts allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of a 7,000-year-old farming village. The experimental archaeology workshops are interesting for families with children and are aimed particularly at children.
The archaeological complex of Pozzuolo is also remarkable in its spatial layout. It comprises the Cjastiei and La Culine elevations on the left bank of the Torrente Cormôr, as well as the surrounding terraces and level areas. A fortified settlement, production areas and four burial grounds were located there. The Castelliere di Pozzuolo is one of the few long-lasting fortified settlements in the central Friulian plain. The site therefore offers not just individual exhibits, but a subject comprising settlement, landscape and the world of early life.
Church, memorial sites and local history
The church of Sant'Andrea is part of the town's historic setting. It stands on elevated ground within the historic fortifications of Pozzuolo del Friuli, on the edge of the present-day settlement. The new Sant'Andrea church was completed in 1648 and consecrated in May of the same year by Patriarch Marco Gradenigo. Sant'Andrea therefore provides a tangible point of reference for anyone interested in architectural history and the development of the town.
Pozzuolo del Friuli is also associated with the attack by the Genoese cavalrymen and the Novara Lancers on 30 October 1917. Another historical reference is the Italian Alpini's campaign in Russia in 1942–43. The Museo storico della Campagna di Russia documents the Italian army's campaign in Russia during the Second World War from 1941 to 1943. In Cargnacco, the Civico Museo Storico is housed in the former church of Cargnacco. Together, these places and topics create a historical profile spanning several eras, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single museum.
Cycling, motorsport and seasonal impressions
Anyone who would also like to stay active during their trip can include the Cormôr cycle route in their plans: it passes through Pozzuolo del Friuli. The Terenzano district is also home to an internationally significant speedway track. In addition to archaeology and history, cycling and motorsport are therefore available as different areas of interest in the surrounding area.
The Sagra dello Struzzo offers a distinctive culinary aspect. It usually takes place between July and August. At this festival, Friulian specialities made from ostrich meat are offered for tasting.
Which accommodation suits your plans?
When looking for accommodation, it is worth first deciding on the desired mix of culture, activity and regional impressions. A holiday apartment in Pozzuolo del Friuli can be an appealing base both for days focused on archaeology and for an itinerary that includes the Cormôr cycle route, the museums or the Sagra dello Struzzo. If you are travelling with children, the Centro Visite Storico Archeologico offers a specific activity through its experimental workshops designed for children. Those primarily interested in historical connections, on the other hand, can combine the topics of Sammardenchia, the Castelliere, Sant'Andrea and the campaign in Russia.
