Corno di Rosazzo lies between forests and vineyards in the eastern hills of Friuli. Wine has been produced here since the time of Roman colonisation. Those planning a trip can therefore combine landscapes, wine culture and historical discoveries. Picturesque cycle paths and walks in the hills are also available – good reasons to consider the desired mix of active days, culture and enjoyable breaks when choosing accommodation.

Wine, tastings and routes through the hills

A prominent starting point for exploring the wine theme is the Tasting Academy at Piazza XXVII Maggio 11 in Corno di Rosazzo. Guided tastings of up to 32 different wines are offered there. The “Cantine e Sapori” tour combines a visit to a wine cellar with a tasting of local products. This is an interesting choice when planning a trip if, alongside landscapes and activity, regional specialities are also to play a role.

Active days can be organised in different ways: the “Colli e Natura” tour takes you by e-bike through hills and vineyards. Rosazzo Bike Tour also offers cycling events in the Colli Orientali del Friuli all year round. The picturesque cycle paths and walks in the hills provide various opportunities to experience Corno di Rosazzo at your own pace. The annual Fiera dei Vini di Corno di Rosazzo complements the town’s wine-cultural character.

Historic places among villages and vineyards

Corno di Rosazzo’s architectural history also makes it a versatile destination. Villa Nachini Cabassi is located at Piazza XXVII Maggio 17 and dates from around 1720. In Gramogliano, the Torre di Gramogliano stands in the village of the same name within the municipality. Of the five original towers of the fortification, only one twelve-metre-high tower built from river pebbles remains today. Villa Torriani dates from the same period as Castello di Gramogliano, which was built in the 13th century.

Another historical highlight is Abbazia di Rosazzo. It is situated in an isolated location in the hills northeast of Manzano and lies within Corno di Rosazzo. The abbey church contains frescoes by Francesco India, known as “Il Moro” or “Torbido”, dated to 1535. The fortified complex also preserves the Church of San Pietro and a beautiful 16th-century cloister.

Churches, chapels and local traditions

The Santuario Madonna d'Aiuto stands at the entrance to the main town of Corno di Rosazzo on the left bank of the Torrente Corno. The associated church was built in 1655; the religious Perdòn takes place at the sanctuary every year from 15 August to 8 September. The parish church of Santa Maria del Rosario in Corno di Rosazzo dates from 1400. In Noax, the Chapel of San Giacomo Apostolo recalls an architectural history dating back to the 13th century; it was later extended and restored.

Further evidence of the area’s history can be found throughout its districts: the Chapel of San Leonardo in Gramogliano dates from the 15th century and was restored in the 18th century. Its two frescoes by Jacum Pitôr are considered a unique example of Friulian naïve art. The Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo in Casali Gallo probably dates from the 14th century and was restored at the beginning of the 18th century. According to local tradition, the Italian and Austrian delegations involved in drafting the Armistice of Cormons ate a simple meal at the Osteria all'Armistizio on 26 July 1866.

The area’s historical diversity also includes Mulino Cainero in Visinale, within the municipality of Corno di Rosazzo on the Judrio River, as well as the original Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo in Sant'Andrat del Judrio. It stood within an old fortified enclosure; excavations there uncovered evidence of burials dating from the 12th century. The Premio Noax/Navuàcs is a cultural competition in Noax and adds to the district’s cultural points of interest.
