Grimacco lies in the upper Cosizza Valley, in the heart of the Julian Prealps. Mountain trails to Monte San Martino sit alongside insights into the culture of the Natisone Valleys. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would rather shape your trip around hikes and viewpoints or around villages, collections and event dates.

Mountain scenery and trails to Monte San Martino

From the summit area of Monte San Martino, panoramic views extend to the Colovrat ridge and the villages of Drenchia and Clabuzzaro. The Clastra–San Martino nature trail (CAI 761) reaches the old 13th-century church of San Martino and the panoramic summit at an elevation of 987 metres. At several points, it crosses the Cammino delle 44 chiesette votive of the Natisone Valleys.

Before Canalaz, a forest track branches off from the road and climbs the western slope to a large mown meadow; from there, a path leads to the church and summit. Shortly after Seuza, a forest track branches off towards Topolò. It follows the right bank of the Val Codariana watercourse for a longer stretch and becomes a path after crossing the Zavelincelman stream. Trail conditions can vary when hiking; check them before setting out.

A route description published in 2017 describes the ascent from Grimacco Inferiore towards Passo San Martino, initially via Grimacco Superiore. The climb to Grimacco Superiore is described as gentle and entirely paved. As surface conditions may have changed, check the current state of the route before setting out.

A historical regional description places Grimacco Inferiore on the southeast slope of the ridge separating the Cosizza and Rieca valleys. An older account also describes a path branching off the road at Dolina and linking Grimacco Inferiore with Grimacco Superiore. Check current trail conditions if you plan to include this connection in your route.

Culture, traditions and local stories

In Clodig, the Carnival is buried every year on Ash Wednesday. Topolò hosts an international avant-garde festival every July. The two events fall at different times of the year, offering different options for planning a trip. If you would like to plan your stay around either event, check the specific dates in advance.

In the municipality, the Museo Ruttar preserves objects illustrating the customs of rural society in the Natisone Valleys at the beginning of the 20th century. The Žefcjova family collection preserves documents and objects from life in the Natisone Valleys from 1600 to the present day. This places specific customs from the early 20th century alongside a broad-ranging view of life in the valleys over time.

The preserved rural architecture in Brida is also part of the local landscape, including houses made of stone and wood. The Castagno di Canalaz is a monumental tree more than 400 years old. Near the mouth of the Codarina stream, the ruins of an old mill can be seen. These places and landmarks complement the mountain trails with cultural, historical and landscape themes to consider when planning your trip.
