Gonars: Trails along the Corno and local history
Accommodation in Gonars
Gonars brings together trails along the Corno, archaeological finds and places of remembrance. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of options: a walking route with two distance choices, a cycling path with additional facilities, another cycling route and several cultural themes. You can base your search for a holiday apartment in Gonars on what you would like to do: enjoy outdoor activities, explore local history or combine the two. This lets you make your own interests the starting point for your plans.
On foot and by bike
The “10,000 Steps in the Corno River Park” route starts at Parco dei Tigli in the centre of Gonars. There is an 8.5-kilometre option and a shorter 4-kilometre route. The two distances give you a direct comparison when choosing how far to walk. The starting point is also clearly identified: it is in the central Parco dei Tigli. This means you can assess the route both by where it begins in the town centre and by the distance you prefer.
The Parco del Fiume Corno in Gonars has an equipped cycling path with benches and information boards. So it is not just a matter of distance: the facilities also include places to sit and information boards. The Gonars–Risorgive cycling route offers a different option; it starts in Gonars’s main square. A description updated in January 2023 gives its length as 31 kilometres and says there are no climbs; conditions may vary. Check the route before setting out. In a direct comparison of distances, the two walking options of 4 and 8.5 kilometres can be set against the 31-kilometre cycling route. This lets you first weigh up the activity and distance.
Border history, remembrance and archaeology
The boundary stone erected in 1753, which marked the former border between Gonars and Morsano, is now kept in the parish rectory in Gonars. Its role as a boundary marker makes a part of local history tangible through a specific object. By contrast, the Monumento all’aviazione commemorates the wartime service of pilot Major Oreste Salomone and the crew of his Caproni bomber. Here, the focus is on a named pilot and his crew, while the boundary stone marks a former territorial border.
The Sacrario Memoriale was built in 1973 on the initiative of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This information about its origins adds a specific year and a named initiative to the other historical points of reference. Another theme of remembrance can be found on the monument in Parco della Memoria: the mosaics reproduce works created by internees in these places. The theme described includes the works, their creators and their reproduction in mosaics.
The focus at the Antiquarium Canzianese is archaeology. Attached to the church building of San Canciano, the antiquarium preserves numerous archaeological finds discovered locally. The themes therefore differ: while monuments and mosaics relate to historical events and remembrance, here the focus is on the finds and where they were discovered.
Nature and choosing accommodation
The Paludi del Corno are also among the partly surveyed biotopes. This connection with nature adds another perspective on Gonars to the walking and cycling routes. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would like your trip to centre more on outdoor excursions or on archaeological and historical themes. Route distances and starting points offer practical reference points for planning outings; the boundary stone, antiquarium and places of remembrance appeal to other interests.
