Bagnaria Arsa: Churches, Roman History and Murals
Accommodation in Bagnaria Arsa
Bagnaria Arsa tells its story through traces of Roman settlement, church architecture and painted house facades. The landscape, once wet and marshy, was later drained. Archaeological finds near Sevegliano, datable construction phases at several churches and the murals in Campolonghetto offer different perspectives on the area.
Roman Traces near Sevegliano
A Roman settlement stood near Sevegliano along the Aquileia–Norico road. It included a small sanctuary that may have been dedicated to Hercules. The finds date from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD; however, continuous use of the site throughout this entire period has not been established. The date range and the tentative interpretation of the sanctuary provide two distinct clues for placing the history of the settlement in context.
Churches with Different Construction Phases
S. Maria Assunta di Castions was built in 1547 and renovated in 1767 by Count Giuseppe Antonio di Strassoldo. In Sevegliano, S. Andrea was built in the mid-17th century on the site of an existing building; it acquired its present bell tower in 1744. The original church of Villa Antonini Dessy was also built as a chapel in 1540. These dates mark different stages in the buildings’ history: an original construction, a renovation and a bell tower added later. This offers a way to look at the churches beyond a single year of construction.
A Circular Walk and Storytelling House Facades
The Path of the Narrating Houses is a circular route of about 9 km, starting from Piazza Sant’Andrea, where Bagnaria Arsa’s town hall is located. There is also a large car park and the Garden of Poetry. Sections of the route follow the ancient Roman road Via Julia Augusta. As route details may be updated seasonally, check the route before setting out.
You can encounter another form of cultural history at the Museo delle Case Narranti in Campolonghetto. This open-air museum features murals on house facades, which serve as canvases for the history, legends, crafts and traditions of Friuli. Artists from across Italy depict these themes there. Check local visiting conditions before your arrival.
The Landscape and Choosing Your Holiday Apartment
The area of Bagnaria Arsa was once wet and marshy and was later drained. This change adds another perspective on the area to its history of buildings and settlements. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider what you want to focus on during your trip: would the circular route of about 9 km be a key activity, or would you prefer to spend more of your travel days exploring churches, Roman history and murals?
