Discover Gallicchio: Nature Trails, Churches and History
Accommodation in Gallicchio
Gallicchio combines striking landscapes with a multifaceted local history. The town is situated on the rocks of the Fosso dei Monaci, in rugged terrain surrounded by caves. This distinctive setting shapes the character of Gallicchio just as much as the buildings and paths that connect the town with its surroundings.
Nature Trails and Distinctive Landscapes
The Sentiero Belvedere is 3.2 kilometres long and runs at an altitude of between 611 and 738 metres. The route leads from the Chiesa del Carmine to the archaeological area of Gallicchio Vetere. The entire route lies within Natura 2000 sites and inside the boundaries of the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano. This makes it possible to combine a hike along the Sentiero Belvedere with an interest in landscape conservation, history and archaeology.
At Piana della Neviera, the route follows an old tratturo that connected Gallicchio with San Chirico Raparo and descended into the Agri Valley. For travel planning, this historic section of the route is a point of interest in its own right: you experience not only a modern hiking trail, but also a traditional connection through the landscape. Those interested in broader nature experiences can also include the SIC Murge di S.Oronzo. There, conglomerate pillars more than 100 metres high and a gorge formed by river erosion are part of the landscape.
A trekking tour in the SIC Murge di S.Oronzo can lead from the banks of the Agri, lined with riverside vegetation, through adjacent oak forests to an extensive evergreen forest. The landscape is home to endangered species including otters, griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and Apennine wolves. These natural features give a trip to Gallicchio a different focus from a stay centred primarily on local history and sacred art.
Churches, Palaces and the Medieval Town Centre
The medieval town centre of Gallicchio includes the Chiesa Vecchia, dedicated to the Assumption, as well as the early 17th-century church of the Madonna del Carmine, located in the old town. The Chiesa del Carmine in the upper part of Gallicchio preserves a fresco of the Madonna between Saints Leonardo and Pietro, attributed to Giovanni Angelo D’Ambrosio. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta also contains a high altar with gilded stucco decoration and wooden statues of the Immacolata and the Assunta dating from the 18th century.
A particularly specific work of art is the painting of the Madonna del Carmine created by Giovanni Angelo D’Ambrosio in 1613, which is also preserved in the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. The town’s sacred history also includes the Cappella della Madonna del Carmelo, built in 1613 on the ruins of a church destroyed by fire.
The palaces also tell the story of the town’s historical development. Palazzo Mazziotta is described as one of Gallicchio’s aristocratic palaces, which belonged to the former feudal lords. Palazzo Baronale was built around the 1620s. It consists of two building sections separated by an inner courtyard and has a vaulted entrance. In 1979, it was placed under protection as a property of artistic and historical interest.
Archaeological Traces and Cultural Memory
The archaeological area of Gallicchio Vetere adds another dimension to the town’s history. Finds from the excavations there are kept at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Siritide in Policoro. They include numerous fragments of roof tiles, pithoi, loom weights and a hoard of 13 silver coins from various mints of Magna Graecia. Those who make archaeology a focus of their travel planning can therefore combine a visit to Gallicchio with a deeper exploration of the finds and their regional context.
Another cultural trace is “MEMORARE IUVAT”, a project documented in Gallicchio to recover and promote the historical memory of the municipality from the Saracen period through to the barony. The programme included a performance entitled “Lo Scaliello d'Orlando”. For visitors interested in local traditions and historical narratives, this aspect broadens the perspective beyond individual buildings.
