Viggiano combines the mountain landscape of the Agri Valley with an exceptional harp tradition. A prominent cultural landmark is the Santuario Basilica Minore del Sacro Monte di Viggiano, which stands at an altitude of 1,725 metres on one of the highest mountains in the Apennines.

Mountain Trails with Varying Levels of Difficulty

Viggiano has a network of trails measuring around 30,000 metres in total, with viewpoints above 900 metres. The trails range from moderate to high difficulty and are therefore suitable for travel planning in which the specific route plays an important role. The Sentiero delle Rupe Rosse is classified as an alpine trail and includes a visit to two caves.

Individual trails also have different focuses. The Sentiero di Santa Maria La Preta ends above a rocky outcrop overlooking the Casale stream. A rock church once stood there. The Torrente-Alli trail begins on the municipal road between Viggiano and Montagna Grande and leads to a narrow gorge with steep rock walls. The trail is considered suitable exclusively for experienced hikers; appropriate equipment and accompaniment by park guides are required.

The Fontana dei Pastori Path starts at Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII and leads through woods and a beech forest to the Museo del Lupo and the Fontana dei Pastori at an altitude of about 1,400 metres. The “Felicetta” trail initially descends to the Casale stream, crosses the watercourse and then climbs towards the Manche area near Felicetta. These different routes allow you to choose between challenging mountain trails, forest sections and a route with changing ascents.

Harp Tradition and Historical Insights

Viggiano’s cultural side is particularly evident at MUVIG. The museum documents agricultural and pastoral work, crafts and domestic life in historic Viggiano. It is located on the restored ground floor of Viggiano’s Franciscan monastery, whose building dates back to 1473.

In the historic centre, small harp bas-reliefs dating from 1858 to 1882 can be found on the portals of some houses and in the keystones of arches. Piazza San Giovanni XXIII also reveals an unusual shape: viewed from above, the square resembles a harp. The Scuola dell’Arpa Viggianese e della Musica was founded in 2008 and recognised by the municipality in 2009 as a cultural institute for reviving Viggiano’s harp tradition. Lessons at the Viggiano branch of the Conservatorio “Gesualdo da Venosa” di Potenza take place at the Villa del Marchese.

Anyone wishing to explore the historic centre in a focused way can request a free guided tour from the tourist information office by making a reservation. For insights into the natural environment, the Museo del Lupo near the Fontana dei Pastori is available. It is located in a beech forest at an altitude of about 1,400 metres, displays stuffed wolves and other animal species from the area and provides information about the Appennino Lucano National Park. Educational sessions are also offered there, followed by guided tours of the surrounding forest.

Winter Activities, Processions and Local Festivals

Montagna Grande di Viggiano is a winter ski resort on the slopes of Monte di Viggiano. The Montagna Grande ski area has two ski lifts and a conveyor belt serving slopes in beech forests. It also includes a three-kilometre cross-country ski trail. Snow tubing, Nordic walking, sleigh rides and snowshoe hikes are also offered; equipment can be rented.

Outside the winter season, regular events also shape the character of the town. The Festa della Madonna di Maggio includes a procession from Viggiano to the mountain on the first Sunday in May. The historic Antico Tratturo della Madonna di Viggiano was a pilgrimage route through the wooded slopes of the Sacro Monte to the sanctuary. The “Review of the Traditional Harp” takes place every year in the first days of August. At the “Vino sotto le stelle” food festival in August, you can taste wines bearing the Terre dell'Alta Val D'Agri designation of origin. The Festa del Ferricello is also celebrated in August and is dedicated to Ferricello Viggianese, which has been awarded the DECO designation of origin.

Choose Your Holiday Apartment According to Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Viggiano, you should first decide whether culture, hiking trails, natural history, winter sports or festival traditions should be the focus. If different interests come together, the travel plans can be organised around the respective activities without trying to fit everything into a single daily itinerary. For the more demanding trails, the stated requirements regarding experience, equipment and park guides are explicitly part of the planning. Anyone primarily wishing to discover the historic centre, the harp tradition and events can consider the location of the accommodation in the town as a separate selection criterion.
