San Fele combines impressive waterfalls with woodland landscapes, religious traditions and a multifaceted local history. The Cascate di San Fele on the Torrente Bradanello are particularly defining features; the stream crosses the area while overcoming numerous changes in elevation. Anyone planning a trip to San Fele can combine experiences in nature, historical discoveries and regional cuisine.

Waterfalls and trails for different day plans

Four trails lead through the surrounding uplands to the Cascate di San Fele. The routes differ in length, time required and the viewpoints described for each one. On the U Urtone trail, you can see a 22-metre-high waterfall in the Vallone Corbola gorge. The Il Paradiso trail leads to the waterfalls in about ten minutes. Le Gemelle is around 300 metres long; the waterfalls form where the Bradano and Acquafredda streams meet.

  • At 4.5 kilometres, the Il Ponte trail is the longest of the four and takes approximately four hours.
  • On U Urtone, the 22-metre-high waterfall in the Vallone Corbola is the main attraction.
  • Il Paradiso leads to the waterfalls in about ten minutes.
  • Le Gemelle combines a route of around 300 metres with the confluence of the Bradano and Acquafredda.

These differences help you adapt your daily plans to the desired trail length. Trained hiking and tour guides are available for guided visits to the Cascate di San Fele. This is one way to get to know the waterfalls as part of an accompanied exploration.

Forests, springs and the Parco del Vulture

Even away from the waterfalls, San Fele reveals itself as a nature-oriented destination. Around 5.2 percent of the municipality, approximately 514 hectares, lies within the Parco del Vulture. The Bosco Santa Croce stretches around the Santuario di Pierno. The Bosco Monte dello Squadro is characterised by biological diversity and natural springs. The area of the Cascate di San Fele in the Parco del Vulture is also designated as a habitat for otters.

Locally, the waterfalls are also called “U uattenniere”. The dialect term refers to a gualchiera, a machine formerly powered by water to full wool. The Gualchiera di San Fele has been recognised as a cultural asset of historical, environmental and ethno-anthropological interest and can be viewed via the tourist trails of the waterfalls of San Fele.

Local history and sacred buildings

The origins of San Fele date back to 969 AD, when Otto I of Saxony had a fortress built. The Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Quercia is dated to 1514 and is located on the central Piazza Garibaldi. The Chiesa S.Maria della Quercia has a floor plan with three naves in the shape of a Greek cross, Baroque stucco decorations from the 16th century and an 18th-century dome. In the left nave there is an urn containing the relics of San Giustino De Jacobis.

San Giustino De Jacobis was born in San Fele on 9 October 1800. His birthplace stands opposite the Chiesa dell’Annunziata in the western part of the town. The interior of this church is divided into two horizontal naves, separated by arches supported by pillars. Further historical highlights include the Palazzo Frascella, an important example of 17th-century architecture, and the Palazzo Stia, an 18th-century palace. Palazzo Stia was the residence of National Guard general Francesco Stia and has an elaborately crafted marble portal with side volutes, fluted central columns and the family coat of arms.

Festivals, pilgrimage traditions and regional cuisine

The Santuario di Pierno welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year, including pilgrims from Apulia and Campania. The festivals in honour of the Madonna di Pierno take place every year on the first Sunday in May, 15 August and 8 September. Another local tradition is the Transumanza in San Fele, which recreates transhumance and activities from the life of shepherds.

San Fele’s traditional cuisine includes homemade pasta prepared according to old, handed-down methods. Alongside nature and history, this gives the town a culinary gateway to its local identity.

San Fele as a starting point for planning your trip

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in San Fele, you can first decide which experiences should shape your trip: shorter routes to the waterfalls, a longer hike on Il Ponte, woodland landscapes, sacred art or the history of the town. If different daily plans come together within your travel group, you can base your choice of excursions on the routes and themes mentioned above. This means San Fele remains interesting both for active days in nature and for quieter discoveries of culture, tradition and cuisine.
