Banzi: Ancient Traces and Living Traditions
Accommodation in Banzi
Banzi is situated on a hill overlooking the Fiumarella stream in the upper Bradano Valley. The town combines this landscape with a rich history: an early church, the remains of a Benedictine abbey and archaeological evidence from Roman times each offer a different perspective. Events that bring the streets of the historic center to life add to the picture. You can discover Banzi through its local history, traditions and excursions.
Santa Maria and archaeological traces
The church of Santa Maria was built in 797. The first document attesting to the existence of Santa Maria Abbey dates from the late 8th or early 9th century. The remains of the Benedictine abbey lie in the center of the present-day built-up area. Those interested in Banzi’s early history will find a distinct thread to explore here, alongside the Roman finds.
The Orto dei Monaci archaeological site lies next to the abbey. It contains the remains of impressive Roman public baths, which underwent several phases of construction. A severe fire led to their final abandonment. Excavations also uncovered the remains of a Roman domus, built around the 1st century BC. These finds make Orto dei Monaci a tangible point of interest for travelers curious about the town’s long history.
A mosaic inscription from the Julio-Claudian period of use refers to Romanius of the Camilia tribe, a sacerdos. He is said to have commissioned the mosaic. The Tabula Bantina was also found in Banzi. The Auguraculum was used to interpret divine signs through birds and/or lightning; it is considered the only evidence in the Latin world of a temple dedicated to divination. Together, these diverse finds offer several ways to explore the ancient past, without focusing on a single structure.
Banzi is also linked to literature: the town is associated with the Fons Bandusiae in Horace’s Ode III.13. However, the spring’s exact location is disputed. This distinction is part of the story: the literary connection exists, but the precise location of the spring has not been firmly established.
Traditions and dates
Every August, Banzi stages a traditional historical reenactment of the arrival of Pope Urban II. Ladies, knights, dignitaries, armed men and local people bring the streets of the historic center to life in a lively medieval tableau. If this event is important to your travel plans, check the program for the relevant year in advance.
The Sagra del peperone crusco is also part of the town’s events calendar. In recent years, the festival has taken place during the first week of September on the streets of the historic center. As plans may change from one edition to the next, it is a good idea to check the specific dates before your trip. A more recently held event with a clear date is the ultramarathon “6 ORE DEI TEMPLARI – Memorial Vito Frangione”: it took place in Banzi on April 26, 2025; this was the 14th edition.
Combine local history with an excursion
For outdoor activities, the Fons Bandusia trail (BNZ-02) offers a specific route: it runs through Banzi from the Grotte Banzullo to Nocellaro and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. There is a large parking area for about ten cars at the trailhead by the Grotte Banzullo. Alongside the town’s historical attractions, you can therefore plan around a named route and an approximate indication of parking capacity.
When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether you mainly want to explore Banzi’s history or plan an excursion along the Fons Bandusia. Banzi remains the starting point for your decision: with abbey history and Roman traces in town, a literary tradition, seasonal events and a named trail within the municipality.
