Melfi combines medieval history, religious art and unusual places such as a church carved into the rock. Anyone planning a trip with cultural discoveries will find various points of interest here: the castle with its Norman past, walls and city gate, several museums, as well as the Vulture-Melfese cycling route as an active addition.

Norman History Around the Castle

Melfi Castle is a Norman architectural complex. It was founded between the 11th and 12th centuries and strengthened by Frederick II in the 13th century. A particularly significant room is also located here: the Costituzioni Melfitane were proclaimed in the Salone delle Scodelle in 1231. The castle therefore represents not only medieval architecture, but also a specific chapter in legal history.

The historic center is completely enclosed by Norman walls with watchtowers extending for more than four kilometers. The Porta Venosina is a reminder of these fortifications. It is the only surviving one of the six gates that once stood along Melfi's walls. Its Gothic pointed arch is complemented by two coats of arms: the coat of arms of Melfi is carved on the right, and that of the Caracciolo family on the left.

Cathedral and Rock-Hewn Church

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta preserves a Norman bell tower built in 1153. It is approximately 50 meters high and has three stories. The cathedral's present appearance was shaped by the last reconstruction, carried out in 1770 on the orders of Archbishop Spinelli. The interior also contains an 18th-century coffered ceiling. Those interested in the connection between Norman origins and later Baroque design can compare several different periods in this building.

The rock-hewn church of Santa Margherita offers a different approach to sacred architecture. It is an example of 13th-century religious architecture carved into the rock. The church houses well-preserved frescoes depicting biblical scenes and episodes from the life of Saint Margaret. Its single-nave layout and central altar also make the structure of the interior easy to understand.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Museo archeologico nazionale del Melfese is housed in the Castello di Melfi. One of its defining works is the Sarcophagus of Rapolla. At the Museo Civico di Melfi in the 17th-century Palazzo Donadoni, the Araneo collection features paintings from the 16th to the 19th century. The museum also displays works by the sculptor Poppa, as well as the rock frescoes “I Tre Santi” and “La Sacra Famiglia,” created in the 17th century and discovered in the caves of Vulture.

The Museo Diocesano di Melfi is located in the 18th-century Palazzo Vescovile, considered a unique example of a bishop's residence in southern Italy. On the ground floor, you can see sacred furnishings and liturgical vestments. The upper floor houses a picture gallery with works from the 15th to the 18th century. This allows you to focus, depending on your interests, on archaeology, painting, sculpture or ecclesiastical art.

Melfi as a Base for Planning Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Melfi, you can first decide how you would like to spend your days. A culture-focused trip can be planned with a varied thematic itinerary featuring the castle, fortifications, churches and museums. If you are traveling with children, you can arrange the discoveries as a series of different themes: mighty walls, a castle, a cathedral, a rock-hewn church and exhibits from different centuries. For a more active element, the Vulture-Melfese cycling route starts at Melfi railway station. Alongside the cultural history, this provides a clearly named starting point for a cycling tour.

For further trip planning, you can also visit Castelmezzano, Barile, Terranova Di Pollino, Rivello, San Chirico Raparo, Maratea, Palazzo San Gervasio and San Severino Lucano.
