Calvello combines art-historical discoveries with the mountain landscape of the Lucanian Apennines. In the town, you will find churches with remarkable works of art, the medieval castle and a distinctive ceramics tradition. Outside the town, paths and roads lead towards Monte Volturino, where culture, landscapes and sporting activities can be combined to create different kinds of holiday days.

Churches, Castle and Ceramics in Calvello

One of the notable cultural sites is Santa Maria del Piano. The church dates from the 12th century and has a remarkable Romanesque portal on the façade and another on the left aisle. Inside, it preserves a Byzantine-influenced wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, believed to date from the 12th century. The Chiesa Madre is also worth a closer look: it contains a 17th-century painting of the young John the Baptist, attributed to the Neapolitan school.

Santa Maria degli Angeli preserves five frescoes dated 1616 and signed by Girolamo Todisco. The Castello di Calvello offers a different way to explore the town’s history. The medieval structure was built on the remains of a Lombard fortress from the 8th century. The Museo Multimediale della Ceramica is located in the west wing of the castle. There, visitors can shape small vases, plates, jugs and other objects on the potter’s wheel under the guidance of local Faenzari potters, and decorate them in the traditional Calvello style.

Local ceramics are characterised by the colours green and yellow, as well as by decorations inspired by products from the surrounding area. It is precisely this combination of historic buildings and contemporary craftsmanship that makes Calvello interesting for travellers who want to discover not only the landscape but also regional design and local culture.

Monte Volturino, Sanctuary and Cycle Route

Calvello lies in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese. From Monte Volturino, the view stretches across the Basento and Agri valleys almost as far as the Ionian Sea. On a rocky spur on the slopes of Monte Volturino, at an altitude of 1,320 metres, stands the Santuario di Maria Santissima del Monte Saraceno. From there, you can look out over a valley with dense forests, clearings and the Piesco River.

The sanctuary is about eight kilometres from Calvello town centre. The approach follows a steep road up the mountainside. This information is just as important for planning your day as the site’s religious significance: the sanctuary houses the image of the Madonna del Monte Saraceno in a wooden urn called a “caggia”. The Feast of the Madonna del Monte Saraceno takes place on the second Sunday in May and on 8 and 9 September.

For cycle tourists, the 28.1-kilometre Calvello–Villa d’Agri section of the Ciclovia Meridiana begins in Calvello. The cycle route runs from the town centre to Monte Volturino, passes through Marsicovetere and ends in Villa d’Agri. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Calvello can combine different ideas for each day: historic sightseeing in the town, an excursion to the sanctuary or a longer bike ride. Calvello is also part of the Monte Volturino ski area; you should take specific seasonal conditions into account when making your individual plans.

Which Location Suits Your Accommodation Needs

When looking for accommodation, you should take the character of the town into account. Calvello has stone houses and narrow streets that can only be reached on foot. If you would like to stay in this area, this calls for careful planning of your luggage and routes. At the same time, the surrounding area offers destinations with distinctly different profiles: the churches and museum represent cultural discoveries, the cycle route offers a more active day, while the sanctuary, with its high-altitude location and steep approach, requires its own excursion planning.

This allows you to shape your trip according to your preferred pace: with ceramics and art in the town, with landscapes at Monte Volturino or with a combination of both. You can also visit the pages on Satriano Di Lucania, Viggiano, Laurenzana, Gli Sgarroni, Francavilla In Sinni, San Fele, Venosa and Acerenza.
