Taszár offers a tangible way to explore architectural history and art: a public artwork stands in front of the entrance to the originally Gothic Roman Catholic church, and the protected Szentháromság-szobor is located at Széchenyi utca 67. These local points of interest have different focuses—on the development of a church building, a particular image, and the protection status of a statue. The wider destination, South Balaton, provides an explicitly regional context.

Church: Gothic origins and later building phases

The Roman Catholic church was originally Gothic. It was remodelled between 1738 and 1741 and enlarged in 1782. This distinguishes its architectural origins from two later interventions: “Gothic” describes the origins, while the dates place the remodelling and subsequent enlargement in sequence. In 1747, its dedication was Kisboldogasszony—chronologically, this falls after the remodelling and before the enlargement.

This sequence brings the different aspects of the church’s history into focus without conflating them into a single building event. Those interested in architecture will find both an account of its original style and details of later changes. The information about the dedication adds another historical reference point to these building phases.

Art and heritage protection in Taszár

A public artwork depicting Szent György (Saint George) fighting a dragon stands in front of the church entrance. This motif adds a specific figurative representation to the architectural history. The Szentháromság-szobor, which is also protected, stands at Széchenyi utca 67. The two artworks are distinguished by what is highlighted about them: the subject depicted in the work in front of the church, and the statue’s protected status.

These themes give the choice of destination a cultural focus without requiring an extensive sightseeing programme. The church’s building phases and the Saint George motif take centre stage; the Szentháromság-szobor adds a separate point of interest, identified by its protected status.

South Balaton: the regional context

The wider destination of South Balaton also offers nature and landscape experiences to explore at a regional level. In 2009, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet (Zselic Landscape Protection Area) received International Dark Sky Park status because of its low light pollution. Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of this protected area. The award and the park are therefore clearly linked to the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet.

Somogy County is home to, among other places, Kis-Balaton, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet, Barcsi Ősborókás and Babócsai Basakert. Baláta lies between Kaszó and Szenta and is one of Somogy’s particularly valued natural assets. These regional details refer to different places and landscapes; they should not be conflated with Taszár’s cultural points of interest.

Water tourism is also part of the region’s appeal: the cross-regional Dráva active tourism network includes water tourism stops along its route through Somogy County. Individual facilities may change during development. If you plan to make use of this option, check the facilities’ availability in advance.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on your main focus first. If Taszár’s church, the artwork or the Szentháromság-szobor are your cultural points of interest, you can focus your search on Taszár. If you are more interested in Somogy’s natural assets or water tourism, first choose a specific destination in the wider South Balaton region. If your family has a range of interests, distinguishing between Taszár’s cultural sites and the region’s nature and water tourism helps you decide on a shared focus.
