Alsóbogát is situated on a hill; the “egyes” pond lies in the valley below. Woods, meadows, and corn and wheat fields shape the surrounding landscape. The hills, valley, and fields give the area a distinct rural character, while the castle park and cultural monuments reveal other facets of the village.

Park and Architectural History

Alsóbogát is home to a protected castle park. The protected park of Festetics-Inkey Castle covers about nine hectares. Almost all tree species native to Hungary grow there, including several hundred-year-old trees.

According to current knowledge, the protected Festetics-Inkey Castle was built around 1853 in the Classical style. The Inkey family had the chapel built in 1850 as a private chapel for themselves and their household. The two construction dates are therefore only a few years apart.

The altarpiece in the Catholic chapel depicts Saint Anthony of Padua and is by Miklós Barabás. Ildikó Csala restored it at the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts, where it is kept. A folk-style cross stands beside the chapel. The Németh family had it erected in June 2005 to commemorate their long stays in the village and their wedding, and also as a sign of their attachment to the village and its people. Different periods and forms of remembrance come together around the chapel: it was built in 1850 as a private chapel for the Inkey family and their household; the cross commemorates the Németh family's stays in the village and their wedding in June 2005. The altarpiece adds a religious motif to this local context; today, it is kept at the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts.

Nearby, at the end of the road, stands a manor house known as the Kiskastély. It is privately owned; the walls of its dining room are covered with original frescoes. While Festetics-Inkey Castle was built in the Classical style, frescoes define the dining room at the Kiskastély. The protected statue of Saint John of Nepomuk has been restored.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

Alsóbogát is a dead-end settlement. From the west, via Somogyjád, a 4.2-kilometre access road leads from the Kaposvár–Fonyód road to the village. The access road is therefore a specific part of planning your journey, rather than simply a turnoff on a through route. Check current road conditions before setting out.

Also take the western approach via Somogyjád into account when planning your journey.

Lake Balaton – South in the Wider Context

The broader Lake Balaton – South destination also has a regional water-tourism feature: on its section in Somogy County, the Dráva active tourism network includes stopping points for water tourism.
