A manor house and church with their own histories

Botka János had the manor house built in the early 1820s. Count Jankovich-Bésán József had it remodelled in 1926–1927. The Roman Catholic church also has its own historical period. It dates from 1773; its tower was added in 1852. Those interested in the village’s history will therefore find several dates here: the manor house’s construction and later remodelling, and the church’s construction date and the later addition of its tower. The older of the two historic buildings mentioned here is the church: its construction date of 1773 predates the manor house’s construction in the early 1820s; it is called the Church of St John the Baptist.

Botanical value in the castle garden

The Jankovich-Bésán castle park has remarkable botanical value. The trees mentioned include large plane trees and lime trees, as well as groups of spruce and Scots pine. The castle garden is a locally protected natural area and is privately owned. It is located within the built-up area of Somogygeszti. Taken together, the plant life, protected status, ownership and location provide a precise picture of this part of the village.

Hiking trail and stamp point

The Dél-Dunántúli-Piros hiking trail is marked as far as its stamp point in Somogygeszti. The stamp point is at the Nemzeti Dohánybolt at 25 Szabadság Street. A change to the route is also important for orientation: the section between Somogygeszti and Mernyeszentmiklós was rerouted after part of the former route had been ploughed up. The new markings are shown both on the ground and on online maps. This means you can take both the stamp point’s location and the information about the rerouted section into account when exploring the hiking trail.
