Kerekegyháza – Harvest Traditions, Church and Kerekerdő

Kerekegyháza offers several different points of interest: a festival celebrating old harvest traditions, a Catholic church with a triangular floor plan, and activities at Kerekerdő Adventure Park. When looking for a holiday rental, you could first decide whether to plan your trip around a festival date or focus on architectural history and park activities.

Harvest traditions at two annual festivals

The Aratófesztivál takes place in Kerekegyháza every year on 19 August. Demonstrations include kneading bread dough, mechanical threshing, milling and shelling corn. They bring to life old folk customs associated with the harvest. If you would like to see these demonstrations, check the programme for the year of your visit before travelling.

The cauldron-cooking competition at the Kereki Majális takes place every year on the second Saturday in May. Visitors can discover local flavours and culinary traditions there. The two dates have different focuses: the competition takes centre stage in May, while the August Aratófesztivál celebrates harvest traditions through several demonstrations of agricultural work. Church architecture and activities at Kerekerdő

Kerekegyháza’s Catholic church was built in 1929 to plans by Lajos Fridrich. Its triangular floor plan follows the shape of the plot. This specific architectural feature complements the recurring annual festivals: here, the focus is on the unusual floor plan and how it fits the plot.

Kerekerdő Adventure Park offers rope courses, an archery range, a forest nature trail, a maze, a trampoline, an airsoft strategy game and a petting zoo. A dedicated Manópálya (Gnome Trail) has been created for families with small children. This provides an alternative focus for activities alongside the folk traditions and cultural attractions. Check whether the park is currently open before visiting.

More attractions in the wider Bács-Kiskun destination

The wider Bács-Kiskun destination also offers a range of cultural and historical attractions. In Tiszaalpár, the Tiszaalpár, Földvár nature trail introduces visitors to the history of the Bronze Age fortified settlement and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. A reconstruction of an Árpád-era village, built to mark the millennium, represents the settlement layout discovered during local excavations. Tiszaalpári Földvár is a specially protected archaeological site in Bács-Kiskun; its designation is based on Decree 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM.

In Kiskunhalas, the Kiskunhalasi Csipkeház and Csipkemúzeum introduces visitors to the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902. There, you can admire lacework dating back centuries and watch the process of lace embroidery. This offers a different cultural focus from the harvest traditions of Kerekegyháza.

For nature-related attractions, the wider Bács-Kiskun destination has more to offer. The Boróka nature trail in Bugac is 1,100 metres long and combines information boards with interactive features such as a forest xylophone and a play telescope. At Lake Szelidi, a nature trail about blue-green algae is open year-round to walkers and cyclists, with twelve information stations. They cover the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms that live there and the wildlife of the surrounding area. Lake Szelidi is a natural oxbow lake that developed from a side channel of the Danube after the Ice Age. Check local conditions before visiting, as they may change.

In Kecskemét, the Természet Háza is the visitor centre for Kiskunság National Park. It provides information about the park’s nature trails, visitor conditions for protected areas, ecotourism programmes and forest schools.
