Nature in the surrounding area

In the middle of the Rekettyés woodland lies a small, artificially excavated pond. It is usually covered with water year-round and provides a habitat for aquatic insects and frogs. This is a distinctive natural feature near Szentkirály: a small body of water within a woodland, whose importance here also lies in the habitat it provides for animals.

Buildings, collections and remembrance

The Gárdonyi Géza Művelődési Ház was built in the early 1950s. The grounds are also home to the Faluház, which is suitable for smaller events. A regular event at the cultural centre is a banquet organised by the Vágó János Gazdakör on 15 March. The building’s history and its programme provide different cultural points of reference; the Faluház is specifically associated with smaller events.

The Községi Gyűjtemény displays objects, equipment and photographs collected or donated locally. Its contents bring together everyday items and images of local origin. For visitors interested in the history and culture of a place, this offers an alternative to a single monument: the focus here is on collected objects and photographs.

The Szentkirályi Református Templom stands east of Szentkirály on a small hill. The single-nave historicist church has a northeastern tower with a diamond-shaped spire; its axis runs from northeast to southwest. In Millenniumi park, the Millenniumi emlékmű makes another striking impression. The work by Lakatos Pál represents a rainbow, or its earthly counterpart: a gateway between past and future. A wreath-laying ceremony is held every year at the ’56-os emlékjel to commemorate the victims of the 1956 Revolution. The church, monument and memorial thus represent different ways of making local history visible.

More culture and nature in Bács-Kiskun

Beyond Szentkirály, the wider Bács-Kiskun region offers other themes to explore according to your interests. In Bugac, the Boróka educational trail is 1,100 metres long; information panels and interactive features such as a forest xylophone and a play telescope combine learning with playful elements. The Szelidi Lake offers a different focus: the blue-green algae educational trail has twelve information stations covering the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms that live there and the surrounding wildlife. This trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle year-round. These topics and details provide a concrete comparison, without suggesting that both trails offer the same nature experience.

The region’s history can also be explored at different sites. The Tiszaalpár, Földvár educational trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortified settlement of Tiszaalpári Földvár and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. The archaeological site is specially protected; it was designated as such under Decree 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM. In Tiszaalpár, a reconstruction of an Árpád-era village, built to mark the millennium, also depicts the settlement layout discovered during local excavations. Kiskunhalasi Csipkeház és Csipkemúzeum offers a different cultural experience: visitors can learn about the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902, admire lacework that is centuries old and see the lace embroidery process. In Kecskemét, Cifrapalota currently serves as an exhibition venue for the Kecskeméti Katona József Museum.

When choosing a holiday rental, you can first decide whether to focus mainly on Szentkirály’s local cultural and memorial sites or also include other nature and culture-related attractions in Bács-Kiskun. Each regional example is located in its own place and offers different content, from educational trails and archaeological history to lace embroidery.
