The historic route through Limenas covers 3.5 km and passes through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site Limenas was built. This makes the city’s history a tangible part of the destination. On Thasos, hiking trails of ecological and cultural interest, archaeological sites and museums round out the attractions.

Makryammos Beach: Sand, water and activities

Makryammos Beach has silvery sand and shallow, emerald-green water. A small island lies at the edge of the bay, and the seabed around it is full of shells. The sand colour, water depth and small island each shape a different impression of this stretch of coast.

The resort’s beach activities include water skiing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and pedal boats. Sports facilities at Makryammos Beach include tennis, basketball and beach volleyball courts. These activities and facilities are offered by the resort.

At the resort’s Mini Club, children can take part in the Little Cormorant programme. A team of professionals accompanies them as they explore the sea, meet deer and peacocks, discover flowers in the gardens and gather fragrant herbs in the greenhouse. The programme brings together encounters with marine life, animals and plants.

Thasos: Hiking trails and views

Thasos has numerous walking paths for hikes of ecological and cultural interest. The trails are suitable for all age groups and fitness levels; conditions may vary with the seasons. A hiking trail can be followed from the Kefalogourna waterfalls. From the 1,204 m summit of Ipsarion, there are views of the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach. Visibility depends on the weather.

The historic route through Limenas is another way to combine exercise and history: the 3.5 km route passes through the ancient city of Thasos. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest conditions before setting out.

Archaeology and history on Thasos

In the southeast of Thasos, the archaeological site of Aliki lies beside Aliki Beach. It includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. The ancient quarry at Aliki has a long history of marble extraction: marble was quarried and exported here from the Archaic period through the Roman occupation and into Byzantine times.

The ancient Agora of Thasos was the political, social, religious and economic centre of the ancient city. The ancient theatre of Thasos hosts the annual Ancient Drama Festival; programme details may vary. Together, the Agora and theatre offer glimpses of different aspects of public and cultural life in the ancient city.

In Potamia, the Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum houses 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis. The Archaeological Museum of Thasos displays artefacts from the Palaeolithic period as well as the Roman and Byzantine eras. The collections thus range from early evidence to works by a named artist.

Other places with very different stories offer further insights into the island’s cultural heritage. The Hatzigeorgis Mansion in Theologos was converted into a folklore museum, which features everyday tools and equipment as well as a depiction of a traditional Thasian village house. The stone bridge in Theologos dates from 1917. It was once important to local residents as a way to reach the coastal settlement of Astrida during heavy rain. Palataki was built in 1903 as the headquarters and residence of the German mining company that operated on Thasos until 1963.

Olive culture on Thasos

Thasos is known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil. In Panagia, the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum is housed in a traditional olive press. It operated from 1915 to 2007, after which it was converted into a working museum. The region’s olive heritage thus connects a well-known food with the history of a historic press.
