Potos is next to a very large sandy beach. Along a stretch of beach beside the picturesque harbour, there are cafés, bars, restaurants, ice cream parlours and nightclubs. There are also narrow streets lined with shops and snack bars that become pedestrian areas; cars and motorcycles are restricted to a few streets in the village. The beach, harbour and village streets offer different ways to spend your time here.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Potos, it is worth first deciding what matters most to you: should the beach shape your stay, or are the shops, snack bars and harbour amenities more important? Potos brings together these distinctive features without requiring you to limit your plans to a single theme.

Thasos: Nature and Culture as an Addition

On Thasos, the wider travel destination, there are numerous footpaths for walks with ecological and cultural interest, as well as hiking trails for all ages and ability levels. Trail conditions can change seasonally. The 1,204-metre summit of Mount Ipsarion offers views of the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach; visibility depends on the weather.

The archaeological site of Aliki lies in the southeast of Thasos, beside Aliki Beach. It includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. The ancient quarry of Aliki offers another glimpse into the past: marble was quarried and exported there from the Archaic period through the Roman occupation and into Byzantine times.

In ancient Thasos, the Agora was the political, social, religious and economic centre. The ancient theatre of Thasos hosts the annual Ancient Drama Festival; programme details may vary. The Archaeological Museum of Thasos also houses artefacts from the Palaeolithic period, as well as from the Roman and Byzantine eras. These places offer different ways to explore the island’s history, from ancient public spaces and theatrical culture to finds from widely separated periods.

One specifically named route for a historical walk is the 3.5-kilometre path from Limenas through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site Limenas was built. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. Regular ferries run between Keramoti and Limenas to reach Thasos; the crossing takes about 40 minutes. There are also regular ferries between Kavala and Prinos; the crossing takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Check the timetable and ferry fares before travelling.

When looking for a holiday apartment, Potos’s own beach and village life remain a practical starting point. If you would also like to include walks or archaeological and historical sites in your plans, destinations across Thasos offer additional options. This lets you decide whether to focus mainly on the beach and village life or also make nature and culture part of your trip.
