Thasos combines traces of antiquity with hiking trails, mountain views and experiences by the sea. Families can choose between cultural discoveries and active days: a historic route leads through ancient Thasos, while hiking trails cater to ecological and cultural interests. Ferry connections to Limenas and Prinos also help you plan your arrival and choose a suitable place to stay.

Ancient History Between Limenas and Aliki

The ancient agora was the political, social, religious and economic centre of ancient Thasos. In Limenas, a 3.5-kilometre historic route passes through the ancient city, on whose site Limenas was built. The route offers a tangible way to explore the history of the area without focusing on any one building.

In the southeast of Thasos, the archaeological site of Aliki lies beside Aliki Beach. Its remains include a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. The ancient quarry also tells a story of long-term use: marble was quarried and exported there from the Archaic period through the Roman occupation and into Byzantine times. Visitors interested in different historical periods will find both religious architecture and traces of the island’s former marble extraction and trade at Aliki.

Museums, Buildings and Thasian Traditions

The Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses artefacts from the Palaeolithic period as well as the Roman and Byzantine eras. The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Potamia has a different focus: it houses 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis. Together, these collections offer different ways to explore the island’s history and art.

In Theologos, the Hatzigeorgis Mansion has been converted into a folklore museum. Exhibits include everyday tools and implements, as well as a depiction of a traditional Thasian village house. Theologos is also home to a stone bridge dating from 1917. It was once important to local residents, enabling them to reach the coastal settlement of Astrida during heavy rainfall. In Limenaria, Palataki is a reminder of the mining history: the building was constructed in 1903 as the headquarters and residence of the German mining company that operated on Thasos until 1963.

Olives are also part of the region’s identity: Thasos is known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil. In Panagia, the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum is housed in a traditional olive press. It operated from 1915 to 2007 before being converted into a working museum.

Hikes, Mountain Views and Experiences on the Water

Thasos has many walking routes for hikes with ecological and cultural appeal. The trails cater to all ages and fitness levels. When planning your day, you can choose whether to focus more on nature or on cultural aspects. A hiking trail starts at the Kefalogourna waterfalls.

The 1,204-metre summit of Mount Ipsarion offers views of the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach. For a change of pace from exploring on foot, there are also water-based experiences: scuba diving is available at Pefkari, and boat trips from Thasos take you to the island’s most remote beaches. Festivals called Kazavitiana are held in summer at the theatre near Mikro Kazaviti. A traditional Thasian wedding is also reenacted in late August. The ancient theatre of Thasos is the venue for the annual Ancient Drama Festival.
