Skala Sotiros: Coast and Bronze Age
Accommodation in Skala Sotiros
Skala Sotiros is a coastal village with a small harbour and a long history. A fortified coastal settlement from the Early Bronze Age offers an archaeological point of interest alongside the coastal attractions. When planning your holiday, you can choose between the beach, the harbour and history, depending on your interests.
Beach and Harbour
The settlement stretches along a beach considered picturesque, peaceful and beautiful. The small harbour has space for hundreds of boats. It also offers the opportunity to go fishing, specifically for beginners and the less adventurous. If fishing is part of your plans, check the current local conditions before your visit. The beach and harbour offer different options for planning your day; the fishing opportunity is also intended for visitors who are less adventurous.
A Fortified Settlement from the Early Bronze Age
The prehistoric fortified coastal settlement was founded during the Early Bronze Age and flourished in the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. It covers just one stremma. Given its small area, it is thought that the settlement may have protected the residence of a local ruler. The possible connection to a ruler remains an interpretation; the founding period, period of prosperity and area provide further historical points of reference. Part of the excavation is open to visitors as an archaeological site. Check the current conditions before your visit.
Church and Village Life
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is also one of the local historical points of interest. It was built in 1890. The village celebrates in this church on 6 August. Alongside the prehistoric settlement, there is therefore a church building from the late 19th century, also associated with a fixed calendar date. These are different aspects of local history to consider when planning your interests: the fortified Bronze Age site and the church with its celebration on 6 August.
