Sfakaki: Beach, Turtles and History
Accommodation in Sfakaki
Sfakaki Beach combines golden, fine sand and clear, shallow water with a coastal landscape also shaped by wind and nature. Northerly winds often bring waves. Sfakaki is about 11 kilometres east of Rethymno, just beyond Pigianos Kambos.
Beach Areas and Coastal Nature
The beach has developed sections with sun loungers, umbrellas, cafés and restaurants, alongside quieter areas. This gives the coast a range of beach atmospheres.
Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nest along the Sfakaki coast from May to September. Marked areas protect the nests. Along with sand and water, the protection of nesting sites therefore shapes the character of the coast. In 2023, large stretches of the nesting beach near Rethymno, including in Sfakaki, were completely covered by waves, destroying existing nests. This example from 2023 shows that waves can affect nesting sites.
Archaeological Traces in the Coastal Area
History is also present in the Sfakaki–Stavromenos coastal area. It includes cemeteries from the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods; a Roman bath complex is also located there. The three periods mentioned give the cemeteries a long historical span, while the bath complex adds another Roman connection. Those interested in the landscape and history can understand Sfakaki not only through its beach and sea, but also through the archaeological remains of the coastal area.
Rethymno: Old Town, Museums and Culture
Rethymno adds a rich urban history to the coastal perspective. The Old Town is designated both a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later altered under Turkish rule. The historic city centre lies below the Venetian fortress, the Fortezza.
Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the Fortezza’s main entrance. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno offers a different focus: housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion, it displays traditional crafts and folk art in five permanent exhibition rooms. Archaeological history and traditional craftsmanship thus offer distinct ways to explore the region’s culture.
Events are also part of Rethymno’s cultural offering. The Renaissance Festival takes place every summer, featuring music, theatre and dance performances as well as art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival is a traditional event that includes a procession organised annually by volunteers. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.
