Agios Pavlos: Beaches, Dunes and Rocks
Accommodation in Agios Pavlos
Agios Pavlos brings together a beach, a bay, dunes and distinctive rock formations. Sand, flat, smooth rocks in the sea, fine pebbles, deep water and an enclosed, sheltered bay define the coast. There are also dunes up to 30 metres high and nearby Cape Melissa. When planning your holiday, it is worth considering these different landscape features as separate highlights.
Beach, Bay and Rock Formations
The beach in front of the Agios Pavlos settlement is sheltered from the wind. Deep green water, sand and flat, smooth rocks in the sea define it. The central beach is the beach area of the settlement of the same name and lies in an enclosed, sheltered bay with clear, deep water and fine pebbles. Both the seabed and the shape of the coast are defining features of the beach.
Right next to the central beach are the folded rock layers of Apoplystra and the Yoga Rocks. Visitors interested in geology will find named rock formations here, as well as the beaches, as distinctive landscape features.
Dunes and Cape Melissa
The sand dunes surrounding Agios Pavlos Dunes beach reach heights of up to 30 metres. They lie next to Cape Melissa and behind a sheltered harbour. Their height creates a striking contrast with the flat rocks in the sea: here, the towering sand formations are an important part of the coastal scenery. If you enjoy comparing landforms, you can consider the dunes, rocks and sheltered bay as distinct highlights of the surrounding area.
A steep wooden staircase west of the beach in front of the settlement leads to Cape Melissa. There are large vertical cliffs there, with geological formations created by wind and sea erosion. The wooden staircase is steep; take this into account when making your own plans.
Beaches in the Surrounding Area
The beaches by the dunes are also close to Agios Pavlos. They have sand and clear water; the seabed is suitable for exploring, and there are sea caves roughly halfway along the beach. These add further natural features beneath and along the water’s surface to the dunes and beach scenery. When planning a visit with children, sand, rocks and caves can provide different topics for conversation and discovery.
Several sandy beaches follow one another along the coastal stretch at the end of the road from Sachtouria. Large dunes, sea caves and bright blue water characterise this succession. This gives a different impression of the coast from the enclosed bay of the central beach: there, deep water and fine pebbles define the scenery, while here the succession of sandy beaches is a distinctive feature.
Getting There and Holiday Apartments
The coastal settlement of Agios Pavlos is accessible via a paved road from Sachtouria. Check local conditions before setting off.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Agios Pavlos, it helps to decide first what kind of coast you are most interested in: the bay, sand and rocks in the sea, the high dunes, or the succession of several beaches? Families can discuss their preferred natural features together. Then check the accommodation’s exact location against the places you want to include in your travel plans. This way, the landscape you are looking for can inform your choice of location.
