Roústika offers tangible points of connection to cultural history: the Anagnostaki Centre is in the village, while the Prophitis Ilias Monastery stands south of it. Literature, family history and architecture provide distinct areas of interest for planning a trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether these themes are what you want your stay to focus on.

Literature and Family History at the Anagnostaki Centre

The Anagnostaki Centre has been operating in Roústika since 2010. It is located in the house where Anestis, the poet’s father, grew up. This biographical connection points to a specific family history: it is the poet’s father, not the poet himself, who is connected with the house.

The centre houses two permanent exhibitions: “Μανόλης Αναγνωστάκης: Ποιητής και πολίτης” and “Ο Ανέστης και η οικογένεια Αναγνωστάκη”. The first identifies Manolis Anagnostakis as a poet and citizen, and the second focuses on Anestis and the Anagnostaki family. The titles thus already set different emphases, distinguishing between the poet as an individual and the family history.

The exhibits include photographs and archival material. Most of it comes from the archives of the poet Manolis Anagnostakis, his sister Loula Anagnostaki, and his friend Milto Polyviou of Thessaloniki. The inclusion of archives belonging to his sister and friend broadens the perspective beyond the poet alone. For those interested in culture, the centre brings together biographical connections, photographs and materials from several personal archives.

Historical Traces South of the Village

On 1 June 2013, the Museum of Greek Costumes in Roústika presented the extensive collection of the Frantzeskakis couple during a guided tour. The date and occasion clearly place this presentation in the past, complementing the literary themes of the Anagnostaki Centre with the history of a collection.

The Prophitis Ilias Monastery lies south of the village. The bell tower of the monastery church was built in 1637; an inscription gives this year. For those interested in architecture, this is a precise historical reference point. Together, the centre’s biographical connections, the collection presented in 2013 and the monastery’s dated architecture offer different starting points for incorporating cultural history into trip planning.

In the Wider Destination of Rethymno

Rethymno also offers its own themes of urban history. The Old Town of Rethymno is designated a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was modified during the later period of Turkish rule. The historic city centre lies below the Venetian Fortezza.

Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building opposite the main entrance to the Fortezza. Its exhibitions tell the story of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion; five rooms of the permanent exhibition showcase traditional crafts and folk art. Thus, the wider Rethymno area brings together archaeological periods and inherited craft traditions as distinct museum themes.

The Venetian harbour is part of the coastline of the municipality of Rethymno. Rethymno Beach is 12 kilometres long, beginning at the historic city centre and stretching eastwards to Scaleta. Its sand is fine-grained and light brown. These coastal features are part of the wider destination of Rethymno and form a distinct point of interest alongside Roústika’s cultural history.

Events in Rethymno also differ in format: the Renaissance Festival takes place every summer, featuring music, theatre and dance performances as well as art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival is a traditional event with a parade organised annually by volunteers.

When looking for a holiday apartment, these interests can provide a starting point: consider whether you would prefer to focus on literature, family history and architecture around Roústika, or on the Old Town, museums, festivals and coast of the wider Rethymno area.
