Castle history at the Upper Castle
Kranichfeld Upper Castle is a Renaissance palace on a mountain spur above the town. Its permanent exhibition offers multimedia insights into around 900 years of castle and palace history and explores the site both inside and out. Since May 2025, the site’s roughly 900-year history has been presented in the exhibition “Learning to See – On a Quest for Clues in”. A media guide for visitors’ own smartphones leads guests around the site; a children’s trail adds to the offer.
The Upper Castle therefore offers several themes for a cultural stay: the site’s long history, its indoor and outdoor areas, and an exhibition complemented by digital interpretation and a trail. If you choose your holiday apartment based on your travel party’s interests, these activities may make the difference when deciding on a stay focused on history and discovery.
Theatre culture and local history
The open-air stage at Niederburg is an outdoor natural stage and traditionally hosts a range of festivals, concerts, theatre performances, musicals, dance shows and folk festivals. Niederburg is now a venue for these different formats. Specific event dates vary, so check the current programme before your trip.
Museums and historic sites also offer their own points of interest. The Baumbach House Museum features a permanent exhibition about the life and work of poet Rudolf Baumbach, the history of the house and Kranichfeld around 1840. St. Michaelis Church is mentioned in written records as early as the 13th century and was referred to as the main church around 1340. Both places connect the town with different perspectives on its history.
The Rose Festival dates back to 1878 and is now a local and folk festival for the town’s children. Along with the events at Niederburg, it shows how both local history and theatre and festival culture can be part of a trip to Kranichfeld. For a stay with children, the children’s trail at the Upper Castle is another specific activity.

The Thuringian Three Towers Trail is a circular hiking route through the protected landscape of the central Ilm Valley in the southern part of Weimarer Land. It connects the Paulinenturm near Bad Berka, the Hainturm in Belvederer Forst near Weimar, and the Carolinenturm near Blankenhain.
The Goethe Adventure Trail is also in Weimarer Land. It follows Goethe’s route to Charlotte von Stein and features twelve stations combining nature and culture; it also connects Weimar and Großkochberg. These trails offer a different focus from Kranichfeld’s museums and theatres. So when looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether the town’s cultural sites or hiking and literary themes in Weimarer Land better suit your travel plans.
