Klettbach brings together three very different traces of the past: the post mill relocated to Klettbach, the church rebuilt in the Baroque style with its organ, and the reputation as a “theatre village” that the community continues to uphold. This combination makes the village interesting for travellers who want to include architecture, music and cultural history in their travel plans, alongside a visit to the village. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is helpful to start by asking whether Klettbach and these themes should be the main focus, or whether you would prefer to explore the wider Weimarer Land region.

Post mill and church: history in buildings

The post mill now standing in Klettbach was built in Esperstedt in 1743 and moved to Klettbach in 1909. It was subsequently upgraded with new technology and has shaped the village’s appearance ever since. Its place of construction, later location and technical development thus represent different stages in its history. The post mill near Klettbach stands 438 metres above sea level and is described as Germany’s highest post mill.

The church also tells a story of the 18th century: it was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1721 and 1725. Its appearance from that period has largely been preserved to this day, including the mansard hip roof and the curved tower dome. The church also houses a Baroque organ built in 1725 by Johann Georg Schröter of Erfurt. It is one of the few instruments from Johann Sebastian Bach’s era in Thuringia that can still be played. The church and organ offer two related but distinct perspectives: the architecture of the reconstruction and a preserved historic musical instrument.

Theatre village and mill festival

Klettbach’s cultural history is not limited to its buildings. With the premiere of the play “The Village Musicians” in May 1902, the village established its reputation as a “theatre village”, which it continues to uphold today. The term points to a tradition that, alongside church music, forms another thread in the village’s cultural life.

A recurring event at the mill site is the mill festival: it takes place every year on Whit Monday, as part of German Mill Day, and offers information and entertainment provided by the Mill Association. The festival also includes the traditional mill service, held from 11 a.m. with Pastor Christian Dietrich. If you would like to plan your visit for this date, check the event details for the relevant year.

Art along the Feininger Cycle Route

Klettbach is one of the 23 places along the Feininger Cycle Route. Near the subjects painted by Lyonel Feininger, colourful lectern-style display boards provide information and explanations about his paintings. So, alongside the village’s local architectural and theatrical history, Klettbach offers a theme that reaches beyond the village itself: the artistic subjects along the cycle route. The displays put the paintings in context, while the mill and church bring Klettbach’s own history to life.

More routes in the Weimarer Land region

At the level of the wider destination of Weimarer Land, the Thuringian Three Towers Trail offers a landscape-focused perspective. The circular hiking trail passes through the protected landscape of the central Ilm Valley in southern Weimarer Land and links the Paulinenturm near Bad Berka, the Hainturm in the Belvederer Forst near Weimar and the Carolinenturm near Blankenhain.

The Goethe Adventure Trail offers a different combination: it follows Goethe’s route to Charlotte von Stein and connects Weimar and Großkochberg. Its twelve experience stops span nature and culture. The two trails therefore have different emphases: the Three Towers Trail links landscapes and towers, while the Goethe Adventure Trail combines literary history with nature and culture stops.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Klettbach, you can use your preferred focus for the trip as your guide: would you like local history to take centre stage, or would you like to include the Weimarer Land region, with its hiking and literary trails, in your plans?
