Rotterode lies on the southern slope of the 600 m-high Rotteroder Höhe. The “Rennsteig-Leiter Rotterode” hike leads through the Mossbachtal valley to the Rennsteig; in winter, the same route is also groomed as a ski trail. This means you can plan the route differently depending on when you travel: as a hike with the Rennsteig as your destination, or as a winter ski tour. If you plan to take the winter route, check the current conditions before your visit.
According to the traditional account, Rotterode is said to have been established after the destruction of Moosburg in the early 14th century. The permanent exhibition “Ons Schdaaimicher,” which opened in January 2022, focuses on the Steinbach-Hallenberg community’s way of life, language development and club life. The original workshop spaces thus bring together practical settings and themes from people’s everyday lives.

Hallenburg is another historic landmark in Steinbach-Hallenberg: it was built around 1212 on the remains of earlier structures. A walk up to the castle offers views of the town and the surrounding mountains. You may need to collect the key from the Tourist Information office to access the tower; it is centrally located in the town center, directly opposite the Metalworking Museum. For longer stays, free parking is available on Bismarckstraße or Hennebergstraße, behind the town church.
A roughly 3 km circular trail runs alongside the Unterlautenberg wildlife enclosure in the district of Unterschönau. Red deer, fallow deer, mouflons and goats can be seen there. The approximate length of the circular trail can help with planning; wildlife viewing offers a different kind of nature experience from hiking through the Mossbachtal valley.
The Knüllfeld is known as Steinbach-Hallenberg’s hiking plateau. During the summer holidays, regular horse-drawn carriage rides there and back to the town center are offered in cooperation with Fuhrbetrieb Falk Nattermann. The ride provides views down into the valley and of the surrounding mountains. In honor of Hallenburg, the Burgfest is celebrated as a major town festival every five years. It adds a recurring festive occasion to the historical themes of Steinbach-Hallenberg.
