Workshops, exhibitions and local history

The Metalworking Museum includes three historic workshops: a nail forge, a corkscrew workshop and a file-cutting workshop. From April to October, blacksmithing demonstrations take place at the museum on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Anyone interested in the history of craftsmanship will find a tangible connection to Steinbach-Hallenberg’s past here.

The permanent exhibition “Ons Schdaaimicher” offers another perspective. It opened in January 2022 and provides insights into the lifestyle, language development and club life of the people of Steinbach-Hallenberg. Together with the historic workshops, it presents different sides of the town: skilled work as well as language and community life. This lets you shape your museum visit around your own interests, without limiting the exhibition to a single subject.

Hallenburg Castle is also part of the town’s history. It was built around 1212 on older building remains. In its honour, a castle festival is held every five years as a major town celebration. As well as the insights offered by the museum, Steinbach-Hallenberg therefore has a historical connection reaching back to a castle complex. A walk up to Hallenburg Castle offers views of the town and the surrounding mountains.

Wildlife enclosure, walks and Knüllfeld

In the district of Unterschönau, a circular trail about 3 km long runs alongside the Unterlautenberg wildlife enclosure. Red deer, fallow deer, mouflons and goats can be seen there. The approximate distance gives you a concrete guide for planning your day, but on its own it does not indicate how long the walk will take. If you would like to watch animals on an outing, you can make this circular trail a destination in its own right.

Another way to spend time outdoors is to walk up to Hallenburg Castle, with views of Steinbach-Hallenberg and the surrounding mountains. Knüllfeld is known as Steinbach-Hallenberg’s hiking plateau. During the summer holidays, regular horse-drawn carriage rides to Knüllfeld and back to the town centre are offered in partnership with Fuhrbetrieb Falk Nattermann. The ride offers views down into the valley and of the surrounding mountains. There are several ways to explore the area: a walk, a circular trail by the wildlife enclosure or a carriage ride during the summer holidays.

Finding your way around and choosing a holiday apartment

The Steinbach-Hallenberg Tourist Information Centre is centrally located in the town centre, directly opposite the Metalworking Museum. For longer stays, free parking is available on Bismarckstraße or on Hennebergstraße behind the town church. These landmarks can help you get to know the places and activities mentioned.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which experiences you would like to shape your stay. If you are particularly interested in the workshops and local history, you could focus your search on the town centre: the Tourist Information Centre is located there, opposite the museum. If your stay will focus on walks, the wildlife enclosure or Knüllfeld, you can take these destinations into account.
