Castle Gardens on a Steep Slope
The Dornburg Castle Gardens cover about four hectares and are divided into several areas. A landscape garden lies by the Renaissance Castle, a geometrically designed garden in front of the Rococo Castle, and a fruit and meadow garden by the Old Castle. Terraced paths connect the gardens on the steep slope and offer wide-ranging views over the Saale Valley.
The design also reflects different garden styles and periods: fruit and grass gardens dating from the 1830s lie by the Old Castle. The garden by the Rococo Castle is laid out in the French style; to the west of the Renaissance Castle is a park modeled on the English style, dating from 1826 to 1828. Thus, a landscape garden, a geometrical layout and park design sit side by side in a single ensemble.
Hiking, Views and Water
Hikes and walks on and around the Wachtberg and Matzberg offer views over Camburg and the Saale. Well-signposted circular trails lead through the Schleuskauer Grund and the Mollschützer Graben. The 71-kilometre-long “Saale Horizontale” panoramic trail also passes through Dornburg. The routes and their views give active days a different focus from the castle gardens.
For trips on the water, raft rides run from Camburg to Großheringen; canoe trips run from Camburg to Blütengrund in Naumburg. The different destinations offer two clearly defined route options. Check which tour options are currently available before making plans.
Swimming and Equestrian Tradition
Camburg outdoor swimming pool is open seasonally. It has a 5,000-square-metre swimming pool, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and a sunbathing lawn. The pool complements walks and garden visits with an opportunity to swim and relax. Check current opening hours before visiting.
Horse breeding has been practiced for centuries in Zöthen, a district of Dornburg-Camburg. Tournaments and horse-related festivals are also held there. Local History at the Camburg Amtshaus
