Tautenhain combines a village landscape shaped by half-timbered houses with red tile roofs with the forest-rich countryside of the Thuringian Holzland. Some half-timbered houses have been carefully restored. At the same time, the village is a starting point for hikes and cycling tours, as well as trips to the surrounding area. If you are looking for a holiday apartment as a base for experiencing nature and local history, these different highlights can guide your choice.

Half-timbered Houses and Local History

A special story is associated with the “Zur Kanone” inn: it got its name after Napoleon’s troops left behind a broken cannon in 1806 on their way to the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt. A replica of this so-called “forgotten” cannon can be seen at the inn. The story connects the name of the building with a specific event in the village’s history.

The listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Johannis also offers several points of interest for those interested in cultural history. It was built as a hall church in 1743, incorporating older structural elements. Its features include a gallery running around the interior, a colorful wooden-beamed ceiling and a carved baptismal angel in the altar area. The organ dates from 1878 and was built by Friedrich Ladegast. The building’s history, its features and the history of the organ each offer a distinct focus.

Forest Scenery and Trails

The forest-rich Thuringian Holzland offers many hiking opportunities. The Eisenberg Mühltal is a Flora-Fauna Habitat protected area in the forest between Tautenhain, Rüdersdorf, Oberndorf and Bad Klosterlausnitz. Tautenhain is a good starting point for hikes and cycling tours through the Eisenberg Mühltal. This offers two options to focus on: exploring the landscape on foot or including a cycling tour through the Mühltal in your holiday plans.

Other trails lead from Tautenhain towards the Elstertal and Bad Köstritz, as well as into the Zeitzgrund towards Stadtroda. These directions offer practical guidance when deciding which landscapes and places to visit during your stay. The hikes and cycling tours through the Eisenberg Mühltal, and the trails towards the Elstertal and Zeitzgrund, are different ways to make your stay active.

Trail information boards connect routes around Tautenhain with the village’s history. The “Berthas Ruh” loop has two information boards; the route goes around Tautenhain and provides information about the village’s history. Four information boards about Tautenhain are located along the “Nistkastenrunde” loop. The number of boards may change. Among other things, the two routes therefore differ in the stated number of information boards.

Annual Traditions

Tautenhain’s annual maypole raising also includes a children’s maypole raising. The tradition is known beyond the region. Another recurring event is the Kanonenfest, held every September at the “Zur Kanone” hotel and restaurant. If you want to plan your stay around a festival, check the specific dates before travelling.
