Nature
The Barker Heide nature reserve offers hikers a special experience of nature and is characterized by inland dunes and glacial drift sand. Dry heathland hills alternate there with small raised and lowland bogs. Since 1996, a herd of around 700 sheep and goats has helped keep the Barker Heide open.
Some paths and unofficial trails there are closed by barriers to protect ground-nesting birds and cranes. The area provides a habitat for moor frogs, bog lilies, and marsh gentians.
The Barker and Wittenborner Heide bird sanctuary covers 1,392 hectares in the Segeberg district. The species list for this area includes, among others, the woodlark and the red-backed shrike. In Schleswig-Holstein's bird sanctuary system, the area is listed under the identification number 2026-401.
History
The heathland landscape of the Barker Heide developed as a result of historical human land use. Forest clearing took place in Schleswig-Holstein during the Middle Ages.
