Bimöhlen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Six Bronze Age burial mounds have been preserved in Bimöhlen. The village lies in a glacial valley between Klausberg, Hallohberg, Keetelviert and Königsmoor and was first documented in 1189.

History

An urn field dating from the Iron Age is documented in Bimöhlen. The six burial mounds and a castle are designated as protected monuments. Finds of iron slag on the edge of the Osterau lowlands indicate iron production from bog iron ore. There are also remains of a medieval motte castle. The central village square still shows that the settlement was once a typical circular village.

Historically, Hasenmoor was a lowland peat bog covering around 300 hectares, whose peat was used as fuel. A 9-kilometre field railway once transported peat to the AKN railway lines in Großenaspe. The remaining peatland area was restored by raising the water level, creating a comparatively large lake. A remaining peat bank illustrates to visitors how peat was cut.

Landscape and Nature

Following extensive restoration measures, Hasenmoor is described as a species-rich habitat. The area is a 275-hectare FFH site and is also called Königsmoor.

Things to Do

Parts of Eekholt Wildlife Park are located in Bimöhlen’s Weide district. Hiking routes run through Bimöhlen’s lowlands towards Weide and towards Hasenmoor on the southeastern edge of the village. Hasenmoor has an observation tower and several hides for observing nature.

Eekholt Wildlife Park offers the opportunity to observe more than 700 animals from 100 species across 67 hectares. The wildlife park also has a large playground for children. The boat trip along the Osterau from Bimöhlen to Bad Bramstedt takes around two and a half hours.

Getting Around

The Bimöhlen canoe launch is located on the K89. A nearby car park facilitates arrival and departure; the surrounding area is described as suitable for riverside picnics and woodland walks. Bimöhlen also has a public transport stop called Bimöhlen Wildpark Eekholt.
