Nature
Lake Nehmser covers 23 hectares and is very shallow; its average depth is 2.20 meters. It is a glacial ribbon lake that formed during the last Ice Age from meltwater dammed beneath the ice.
Lake Muggesfelder covers 27.1 hectares. Its average depth is 9.6 meters, while its greatest depth is 20.7 meters. The Muggesfelder Lake Circular Trail runs along the edge of the Muggesfelder Moor and then beside the lake through an alder swamp forest. It then passes through a mixed forest dominated by beech and spruce trees.
Old holly trees grow in the small mixed forest southeast of Lake Muggesfelder. Around the lake, black woodpeckers can be observed in older European beeches; stock doves nest in the cavities created by the woodpeckers.
Trails
The Muggesfelder Lake Circular Trail is described as a family-friendly, signposted circular trail. A bench on the southern shore offers a view of the lake and Muggesfelde Estate. The estate is not accessible via the hiking trail, but visitors can look into the courtyard from outside through the main gate.
The regional cycling loop Landpartie 1 passes through Nehms on an approximately 30-kilometer circular route through the foothills of Holstein Switzerland. Its section along Lake Nehmser follows the lakeshore and offers a bathing area with a sunbathing lawn, jetty, and public toilet.
History
Archaeological finds at Lake Nehmser suggest that the area was used as a hunting ground during the Neolithic period. The finds include flint, millstones, and bone remains.
The gatehouse of Muggesfelde Estate dates from the mid-17th century and originally served as a riding stable and riding arena.
Farm Life
Hof Hohlegruft in Nehms has operated an organic farm shop since 2002 and produces bread, rolls, and cakes in its own bakery. Fruit spreads and elderflower syrup are made there mostly from fruit grown on the farm. Pork and sausage products from Angler Saddleback pigs are also sold.
The range includes around 70 types of cheese and approximately 60 varieties of fruit and vegetables, mainly sourced from the region. During regular opening hours, visitors can walk around the farm, pet the animals, and drink coffee or tea.
Hof Hohlegruft is described as a farm animal ark that contributes to the preservation of endangered livestock breeds by continuing to keep them.
