Culture and History

St. Mary’s Church is the oldest building in Bad Segeberg. The town’s history also includes the Blunck wool spinning mill: the ensemble of buildings, founded in 1852 and still equipped with functioning machinery, is an industrial monument in the centre of Bad Segeberg. There, more than 150 years of wool production and working history, including the period when clothing was produced, can be experienced. The wool spinning mill also explains the complete sequence of wool processing – from purchasing the wool through washing and drying to spinning, dyeing, packaging and selling.

The Rantzau Chapel and the Rantzau Obelisk date back to the work of Heinrich Rantzau around 1550. A self-guided walking tour of Bad Segeberg takes visitors along a route of approximately 1.5 kilometres through more than 875 years of local history. The Segeberger Bürgerhaus Museum presents the development of Bad Segeberg from a castle settlement to the present day. The Otto Flath Art Gallery preserves the artist’s former home, exhibition building and workshop as an ensemble.

Nature and Landscape

Kalkberg hill allows visitors to climb to a viewpoint on the 91-metre-high summit. Seasonal guided tours also lead into Kalkberg Cave, described as Germany’s longest gypsum cave and an important natural bat roost. The adjacent Noctalis exhibition offers an interactive bat experience with live tropical bats.

The 5.1-kilometre Ihlsee circular route follows natural paths through the Ihl Forest along the Trave meadows. Bad Segeberg is part of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. The lakes also shape the landscape: Lake Großer Segeberger See has a promenade, bathing facilities, boat rental and a circular route of approximately 7.5 kilometres. Ihlsee and the adjacent Moorwald forest form a protected area with a walking path of approximately 3 kilometres along the lake.

Water and Exercise

Stand-up paddling is permitted on Lake Großer Segeberger See with a day licence and your own or a rented board. The Trave passes Bad Segeberg and offers opportunities for paddling and swimming.
