Wanderup: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Wanderup retains the form of a typical linear village; some houses are still thatched. Between local history, the swimming lake and paths through the countryside, the village reveals different sides.

Culture

Wanderup Church is a Romanesque fieldstone church that probably dates from before 1200. After the original building had become too small, it was extended to the west. The wooden bell tower was built in 1754 after lightning destroyed the former tower and bell. Two original Romanesque windows have been preserved on the north side; historically, the church served as a refuge during attacks.

In the north wall of the chancel is a former sacrament shrine that was later converted into an offering box. A striking iron spoon-shaped “money channel” is associated with charitable giving in the village. The Wanderup Local History Museum was founded in 1971 to document the history and development of a geest village. It is located in the former teacher’s apartment of a school building dating from 1859. The complex includes the Dämpferhalle as an exhibition hall for large agricultural machines; additional agricultural equipment is displayed outdoors. Other exhibits include local history since around 1800, a collection of native wildlife, textiles and household appliances.

Orientation

The nearby town of Tarp provides access to the A7 motorway and has a railway station. Hourly bus services connect the area with Flensburg and Husum.

Water

The Wanderup Lake Tour is a 4.9-kilometre hiking route; Wanderup swimming lake is named as the suggested starting point. The publicly accessible swimming lake offers toilets, changing rooms, an outdoor shower, a volleyball court, a large lawn and free parking.

A firm path leads to a water platform. There are also seating areas, storage space and a handrail for entering the lake.

Experiences

Wichtelpark is a year-round park where wooden gnomes can be found beside the paths, on a bench and in the treetops. By bicycle, the 43-kilometre Große Binnenlandtour route leads through Wanderup as well as through an extensive hedgerow landscape and small villages.
