Elmshorn: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Elmshorn reveals its unique character along the Krückau, in its urban history and on the routes into the surrounding area. At the centre is St. Nikolai, Elmshorn’s oldest church building: a Gothic hall church with Baroque furnishings that is regularly open to visitors. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Elmshorn can then continue searching for accommodation.
Culture
The Elmshorn Industrial Museum presents the development of industry, technology, work and everyday life in Schleswig-Holstein across four floors. It is housed in a listed warehouse and offers multilingual audio guides. Elmshorn’s water tower was commissioned in 1902 and is open to the public following renovation.
The Tahara House at Elmshorn’s Jewish cemetery contains an exhibition about the city’s Jewish citizens and their persecution under National Socialism. The Konrad-Struve House presents everyday, typical and curious objects from Elmshorn’s urban history in a modern exhibition collection and a reconstructed living room. Visitors walk through an accessible archive of local history.
Along the Krückau in the city centre, Elmshorn’s sculpture garden displays twelve traditional and contemporary works. Guided city tours lead to historic buildings, the harbour and notable residents of Elmshorn.
Water and Nature
The Krückau Harbour is Elmshorn’s maritime centre. From its berth in Elmshorn Harbour, the historic Ewer GLORIA offers sailing and motorboat excursions on the Krückau, the Elbe and its tributaries.
The Krückau has a different landscape character at low and high tide and provides a habitat for lampreys and kingfishers. It also forms part of the designated FFH areas “Upper Krückau” and “Schleswig-Holstein Elbe Estuary and Adjacent Areas”.
Leisure
Badepark Elmshorn combines a 25-metre pool, a 110-metre slide, a climbing wall, a children’s area, a sauna area and water-based courses. It can be reached by bicycle, bus or car. On the north bank of Elmshorn Harbour, there is a motorhome parking area available all year round.
Getting Around
The Krückau hiking trail begins at Mühlendamm and leads through Krückaupark in Elmshorn. It then continues through Bokholt-Hanredder to Barmstedt and on to Rantzauer Forst and Lake Rantzau.
The Ochsenweg and the Elbe Cycle Route offer opportunities to explore Elmshorn and its surroundings by bicycle. The Elbe Cycle Route passes through Elmshorn.
