Epenwöhrden: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Epenwöhrden is situated in the expansive marshland north of Meldorf. The history of Epenwöhrden has its roots in the settlement of the marsh on elevated dwelling mounds: traces of settlement date from the 4th to the 8th century, and the first documented mention dates to 1447. Culture

At Dusenddüwelswarf, an information pavilion explains the events of the Battle of Hemmingstedt. The monument there consists of a glacial erratic commemorating the battle and was erected on 17 February 1900 – exactly 400 years after the conflict. The Battle of Hemmingstedt preserved Dithmarschen’s de facto existing independence for 59 years. Dusenddüwelswarf is signposted from the B5 between Meldorf and Hemmingstedt.

Nature

A large part of Epenwöhrden east of the B5 consists of marshland. In the Ehemaliger Fieler See protected area, wet grassland plant communities are protected, including severely endangered sedge stands. The inland marshland of Dithmarschen is characterised by agriculture, dykes and drainage ditches.

Cycling

At the junction of Epenwöhrdener-Moor and the L147 stands the pedunculate oak “Klimabaum No. 1”, the first climate tree in Germany. A large glacial erratic marks the site and the centre of Dithmarschen. The site has seating and bicycle racks; the climate tree site is a picnic area with views across the Dithmarschen landscape. The “From the Moor to the Geest” cycling route passes through protected marshlands and, on the return journey, through villages including Epenwöhrden.

Events

Epenwöhrden’s well-maintained traditions include the annual children’s bird-shooting festival, the leasing of paths, a senior citizens’ excursion and a local heritage festival. The event includes children’s activities such as bicycle ring-stabbing, skittles, golf and carousel ring-stabbing.
